Chapter 4 • Obsession-killing the pigs. “They don’t smell me. They see me, I think… If only I’d some green” (63). Jack is figuring out how to get to the pigs without them noticing. • Panic-the fire going out. “Ralph-please! Is there a signal? […] but Ralph started to run, splashing through the shallow end of the bathing pool […] Simon ran after him, then Maurice […] Piggy shouted” (67).
Chapter 4 cont. • Structure vs. Savagery – the fire. “Ralph spoke. ‘You let the fire go out.’ ‘I… You should have been with us, Ralph. We had a smashing time’ […] ‘We hit the pig-’ ‘I fell on top-’” (71).
Chapter 5 • Structure vs. Society-losing control. “If I blow the conch and they don’t come back, then we’ve had it. We shan’t keep the fire going. We’ll be like animals. We’ll never be rescued” (92). • Thirst for power-struggle between Ralph and Jack. “‘He hates you too, Ralph.’ ‘Why me?’ ‘I dunno. You got him – over the fire; an’ you’re chief an’ he isn’t’” (93).
Chapter 5 cont. • Loss of innocence-people are loosing innocence. “No one had seen the mulberry-colored birthmark again. But that time, Piggy had coaxed and bullied. Tacitly admitting that he remembered the unmentionable, Ralph nodded to Piggy” (86).
Chapter 6 • Order vs Disorder-Jack trying to take over. “It’s time some people knew they’ve got to keep quiet and leave deciding things to the rest of us” (102). • Order vs Disorder-people stopped listening. “I’m chief. We’ve got to make certain. Can’t you see the mountain? There’s no signal showing. There may be a ship out there. Are you all off your rockers?” (108)
