What is a written argument? • It is always about the topic of the text. • It is a claim or series of claims an author makes about how things are or should be. • It is supported by evidence. • It’s purpose is to convince or persuade
What are claims? • Claims are an author’s opinion about some idea or topic, they are not facts. • Claims usually come before the evidence that supports them. • Claims can be counterarguments that challenge those who disagree
What do claims do? • Establish the author’s opinions • Support the main claim
How do I know if a statement is a claim? ASK YOURSELF: • Is this statement an opinion? • Is this opinion supported by any evidence (e.g. facts, stats, research studies, anecdotes, expert testimony etc.)? • Does this statement support the author’s main claim? IF YES TO ALL 3, then it is a CLAIM!!!
SOOO… • Since claims are the opinions of the author, let’s now see if we can identify what an opinion is!!
Is it a claim or evidence? • According to the National Science Foundation, 23% of teenagers are obese. • Fast food industries are to blame for America’s obesity problem. • The problem of obesity in America is not just obese people’s – it is all of ours. • President Obama supported the idea of charging parents of obese children with crimes.
