Structure of a Position Paper • Clearly labeled Committee, Topic, and Country • 1 to 1½ pages in length • 1st Paragraph: A brief introduction detailing your country’s history (if any) with the issue. • 2nd – 3rd Paragraphs: A detailed analysis of your country’s opinion on matter, providing very specific claims on plausible resolutions. • Closing: Re-establish your overall stance on the issue

  4. What To Include in a Position Paper • Anything Recent in the news on the issue! • How the issue affects your country • How the region your country is in is affected • Security reasons, humanitarian issues, legality, etc. • Your country’s policies, and justification on the issue • Specific statistics regarding the issue • Actions taken by your government on the issue • Actions taken by other nations governments on the issue • Significant QUOTES about the issue!!

What To Include in a Position Paper • Past resolutions signed/ratified by your country regarding the issue • (Bilateral & Unilateral Agreements, Treaties, etc.) • UN Actions supported or opposed by your country on the issue • What your country believes should be done about the issue • How other countries affect your country’s opinion/decision about the issue

  6. Extra Notes • Don’t be too wordy, stick to your point, even be a little repetitive (but not too repetitive!) • Be organized by giving other possible resolutions to your issue • Always CITE your sources! Tell where you got your information! • Use Footnotes, Endnotes or In-text Citations – and show that you did not just use Wikipedia or only internet sources – they hate that!

  7. Good Sources • The UN Database for resolutions / and any information on your country’s delegation • Press conferences given by your country following a UN convention • National & International newspaper articles • The CIA information site for various statistics • Foreign Ministry Websites (for each country) http://www.unausa.org/munpreparation
