MUN PSYCHOLOGY Vincent Tsao
Psychology is a kind of Science • Is the Study of Mind, Brain and Behavior • Every single theory must be supported by experiments • Making what you already know a theory • Find out what you didn’t notice but actually happening
What’s the point? • Psychology is a kind of Science • You may already know the results, but today you are going to hear the underlying theory • You may not believe it because it is happening unconsciously
What are we going to do today? • Different Kinds of Memories • Cognitive Dissonance • Mere exposure effect • Schachter-Singer Two-Factory Theory of Emotion • Internal/external Justification
What are we going to do today? • Should I or Should I not listen to music while doing my research? • How to like MUN more? • How to get a BD more easily? • Is getting the BD really good for me?
Sensory Memory • All the feelings you have right now • You lose it if you don’t pay attention to it • Monkey business illusion
Short Term Memory (Working Memory) • Things you have in mind right now • Digital Span • 4±2 items
Long-term Memory • The “Memory” people talk about • Unconscious • It’s storage is infinite
Best way to retrieve memories • To know exactly what you want to retrieve • The more familiar the situation is, the more easier you will retrieve it.
NO Listening to music while doing research?
DR, Statement • Put the most important point at last (especially a long one) • Repeat the important ideas again and again
Do we really like what we think we like? • Psychologists say NO What we really like What we think we like Cognitive Dissonance What we don’t like
Cognitive Dissonance • Cognitive :our mind, thinking Dissonance:conflict, incongruity • People have the tendency to solve the conflict between your behavior and your attitude
Cognitive Dissonance Change your Attitude Attitude Conflict Change your Behavior Behavior
Self-Justification is in your everyday life • We tend to see ourselves in a positive way • We have to be smart, we have to make the right decision • The experiment of lying to other participants
What happens if you don’t like MUN? • You participating in MUN lectures, activities and conferences. • How come that I took part in an activity that I don’t like? • I think it’s because of MUN is a great activity to participate, that’s why.
What happens if you can’t choose between xxsec and ModelUN? • You participating in MUN lectures, activities and conferences. • You look for evidence that proves you made the right decision • You like MUN
PARTICIPATEINMUN !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 11/17field trip 11/18,20,22 Mock
After participating in it… • Make it intense • Fierce debate in conferences • Full participation in Activities • Feel stressed and anxious about the try-out
What happens if there are no clues • You find a clue for yourself • Sometimes (most of the time) is wrong • Misattribution of Arousal (sometimes happens even if there is a clue) • Suspended Bridge Experiment
Two-Factor Theory X MUN • You got aroused • You misattributed to MUN conferences, activities (sometimes) • You have higher possibilities to like MUN more !!!!!
How to like Model UN more? Participate (Cognitive Dissonance) Make it intense (two-factor theory) “Unconsciously”
How do Iget one? • Do your research • Try to speak more • Write some documents • Negotiate with other delegates • ……
Before we start… • This only works significantly when you have done the aforementioned things • Some people don’t believe this (because this works in their unconscious)
Mere Exposure Effect • You have the tendency to like the things that appear more frequently • Including objects, people, ideas, minds……
In MUN conferences • Speak in moderated caucus • Talk to the Dais in unmods or suspension • Change your flash drive into your country’s name • Wear a tie or something that can show your country
Why shouldn’t Iget one? • Some people go to MUN conference for that BD, but they forget the essence of MUN is to learn to solve problems and make the world better • Rewards harm intrinsic motivations
Extrinsic motivations • Rewards • Punishment • It don’t last long after the extrinsic stimulus disappears
Intrinsic motivations • Curiosity • Self-Esteem • It lasts longer, it does not need a stimulus
Rewards (such as BD) • Converting intrinsic motivations into extrinsic motivations • Encourages those who don’t have intrinsic motivations
Should I get one? You will get it if you deserves it It shouldn’t be your ultimate goal
Conclusion Psychology can help you explain a lot of things, but the most important thing is to believe in what you do Don’t let anything harm your intrinsic motivation, always try to remember your initial thoughts Participate in MUN, I’m sure that you won’t regret at last.
