A Typical Day in the Life… Of a GMS Hurricane • 8:10-8:30 Homeroom/Breakfast • Day officially starts at 8:30 • Academic and Connections classes fill the day • Lunch during 4th period • The school day ends at 3:45 Front Office Hours are 7:30am to 4:15pm
Hurricane Academics • Students have at least FIVE academic classes each day: • English/Language Arts • Reading • Math • Science • Social Studies * Some students participate in academic connections classes too…
Common Core Curriculum • Georgia joined with 46 states and territories to adopt the Common Core Standards • The focus is Math, Language Arts, and Literacy • The goal is to provide a consistent framework to prepare students for success in college and/or the 21st century workplace. 6th Grade Mathematics Courses Middle Grades Mathematics Accelerated Middle Grades Mathematics 6th Grade: Cover Grade 6 Standards Cover ½ of Grade 7 Standards 7th Grade: Cover ½ Grade 7 Standards Cover Grade 8 Standards 8th Grade: Cover all of Coordinate Algebra and ½ of Analytic Geometry Earn High School Elective Credit • 6th Grade: • Cover Grade 6 Standards • 7th Grade: • Cover Grade 7 Standards • 8th Grade: • Cover Grade 8 Standards
6th Grade Accelerated Math Requirements • To qualify for Accelerated Mathematics, rising 6th graders must: • Score 870 or greater on grade 4 CRCT • Score 870 or greater on grade 5 CRCT • Score 90% or greater on grade 5 District Test 4 • 90% or greater mathematics grade average for the year • (and) have a teacher recommendation Please contact Shelly Bydlinski, K-12 Mathematics Coordinator, with mathematics placement questions.
Connections Classes… • Career Technology – explore technology and how it shapes our lives • Keyboarding – refresh keyboarding skills while being introduced to 21st century business principles • Art – nurture your creativity through drawing, painting and other fun projects • Health – learn about a healthy lifestyle • Physical Fitness – participate in a variety of fun exercises and activities to get you moving

Guidance Department… at your service • We offer: • Individual, Small Group and Classroom guidance and counseling on a variety of academic, career and personal/social topics • Parent Conferences • Not compulsory • Test Interpretation • Academic Advisement Counselors – Ms. Molloy and Ms. Jones Guidance Secretary – Ms. Gibbs
Media Center Services • Over 12,000 books available for checkout • Over 20 magazines and periodicals • Access to the online public catalog (OPAC) • Internet access for research • 24 computer stations with internet access • Laptop carts Media Center Opens at 7:45 am
Lunchtime at the Hurricane Café • 5 different lunch choices • No charge policy • Must turn in lunch applications each year Free Breakfast for all students
Attendance Policy • Absences are excused by a written note from the parent/guardian for the following reasons: • Personal illness • Death or serious illness in the family • Recognized religious holidays • Absences mandated by order of government agencies • Check-in & Check-out • Parent/guardian must come to main office to sign a student in or out
Agendas and IDs • Everyone is required to wear photo ID badges with a school issued lanyard and pouch • No ID badge = silent lunch • GMS Hurricanes use agendas in many ways: • As a place to write down assignments • As a hall pass • As a way for teachers to communicate with parents. Bring your ID and Agenda to school everyday!
The 411 on Fashion at GMS… • More is more – Keep your shoulders and torso covered • No tank tops • Know the fingertip rule: • There should be no skin showing above the fingertips when your arms are help by your side • Keep your pants up around your waist
ONE MORE THING… • Electronic Devices • Not allowed to be on or visible during school hours (unless under supervision of a teacher) • Are allowed to be used after dismissal outside of the school building
Be on the look out… • Rule the School and Connections Selection Forms • Bus Schedules – will be available at Open House, before the start of next school year • Summer Reading Program – A novel will be provided to each student before school is out • Students are encouraged to finish the project before the 1st day of school • After School and Saturday School Programs • Offer a chance for instructional enhancement and credit recovery • Information will be available at the start of the school year
Hurricanes are all about… • Respect • Ownership • Learning • Leadership • R.O.L.L. with us and be rewarded for positive behavior • R.O.L.L. cards allow students to earn prizes during Redeem Day • Sit outside, popcorn, raffle prizes, etc. • Be a R.O.L.L. model • Nominated by teachers and honored at the 9 week R.O.L.L. Reception

CAT-5 Card • Students must exceed (850+) on all FIVE CRCT tests: Math, Language Arts, Reading, Science and Social Studies • Students with a CAT-5 Card are admitted into sports and other school events for FREE • Students also get preferential seating at lunch in the outside courtyard.
Hurricane Athletics • Fall Sports: Softball, Football, Cheerleading, Volleyball • Winter Sports: Boys & Girls Basketball, Wrestling • Spring Sports: Boys & Girls Soccer, Baseball, Boys & Girls Track Playing a sport for the Hurricanes is something to look forward to in 7th & 8th grade! So keep those grades up and your behavior great!
Art Club • Any student interested in art is welcome! • Meets twice a month • Activities include: painting, drawing, and sculpting with clay and color
Drama Club • Any student interested in drama is welcome! • Meets twice a month • Performances are put on throughout the year
BRAVEHeart • Purpose is to promote abstinence and wise choices among young people • Meets monthly • Permission slips with parent/guardian and student signature required
GMS News Team • Conducts the school wide morning announcements • Uses progressive technology • Must audition
Jr. Beta Club • Leadership service club • Community service • Membership requires outstanding character and high academic achievement
Salt Marsh Soldiers • Eco-friendly • Nature • Environment • Community
Step Team • Stepping with choreographed routines • Open to all grade levels • No experience necessary
PTSA • Officer positions available for next school year • Membership will begin during Open House • Please become involved with Glynn Middle as a parent volunteer
