Early Days Mann was born in Massachusetts on the 4th of May in the year 1796 At the age of 20 Mann enrolled in Brown University and later became a librarian for that university. In 1827 Mann was elected into the Massachusetts legislature

Westfield Horace Mann was responsible for founding Westfield State University in 1838. It was the first public co-educational institution of higher learning in America to offer an education without barrier to gender, race or economic class
Mann Taking Control 1837 the state created the nation’s first board of education, with Mann as its secretary. And then later in 1838 Mann started a biweekly journal called, “Common School Journal” teaching the teachers his learning's on education, or whoever would listen. At this time Mann developed some principles regarding public education..
Six Principles of Education Mann created six principles of education: (1) Citizens cannot maintain both ignorance and freedom (2) This education should be paid for, controlled, and maintained by the public (3) This education should be provided in schools that embrace children from varying backgrounds (4) This education must be nonsectarian (5) This education must be taught using tenets of a free society (6) This education must be provided by well-trained, professional teachers.
