The presentation has been designed so that it can be used independently of GMTU Report 998 for those who want an overview of the traffic movements around Rochdale but do not wish to see the detailed tabulations GMTU Reports 998 & 998P are part of a series of reports presenting the data from the 2002 GMATS surveys GMATS Surveys 2002 Report 998P – Rochdale Key Centre

Travellers leaving Rochdale Key Centre by car & bus were asked about their journeys as they crossed a cordon around the centre Rail passengers boarding at Rochdale station were also interviewed This presentation gives an overview of the findings from those surveys It considers first people who had visited the Centre, then those travelling through GMATS Surveys 2002 Rochdale Key Centre

  4. Note that the GMATS survey points lie outside the ring road. The reason for this was to maximise the usefulness of the data, particularly in developing traffic models The Key Centre monitoring points for the LTP lie inside the ring road This latter cordon defines the Key Centre used in this analysis Rochdale Key Centre Definition

  5. Nearly 22,000 were in the Key Centre between 07:00 & 19:00 78% used car 22% used bus Only 0.1% by rail Visitors to the Key Centre How many visited the key centre and how did they travel?

  15. 76% of commercial vehicles leaving the Key Centre were Light Goods vehicles (LGVs) 73% of LGVs had journeys which finished within Rochdale Only 4% of commercial vehicles leaving the Key Centre were HGVs, but 56% of these journeys finished within the rest of Greater Manchester Commercial Vehicles leaving the Key Centre Where are they going?

  16. 52% of all commercial vehicles were collecting or delivering goods in the Key Centre 42% of LGVs were on ‘other business use’ and 7% were on personal business trips Commercial Vehicles What were they doing in the Key Centre?

  17. The average distance for all goods vehicles was 10 km HGVs travelled 38 km on average compared to 6 km for LGVs and 21 km for MGVs Commercial Vehicles How far did they travel?

  20. All trips passing through the survey cordon • All the previous slides have referred to trips starting in the Key centre. These next slides look at all trips crossing the survey cordon • In the case of bus trips, all trips crossing the survey cordon are included • In the case of rail, only those trips which either start at Rochdale Station or require an interchange at Rochdale Station are included i.e. passengers on trains such as the Littleborough to Manchester service were not surveyed unless they changed trains or started at Rochdale

  21. 89% of all trips crossing the cordon were made by car, 10% by bus and 1% by rail 74% of car trips and 75% bus trips finished within Rochdale 53% of rail trips finished at Manchester All trips passing through the survey cordon How and where were they travelling?

  22. 29% of all trips were either ‘Home to Work’ or ‘Work to Home’ trips ‘Home to Shopping’ and ‘Shopping to Home’ accounted for another 17% of trips 21% ‘Home to Employers Business’ ended outside Greater Manchester All trips passing through the survey cordon What was their purpose?

The average distance travelled for cars was 9 Km, for buses 6 Km and for Rail 22 Km The longest distances for all modes were ‘Home to employers business’ (18 Km) and ‘Employers business to home’ (18 Km) ‘Home to work’ trips were 11 Km by car, 7 Km by bus and 17 Km by rail. The return directions were slightly shorter All trips passing through the survey cordon How far were they travelling?

  24. 96% of people walked from the alighting bus stop 4% caught another bus This is similar for all journey purposes Bus trips passing through the survey cordon How did people get to their destination from the bus?

  25. On average there were 11 people per bus crossing the cordon between 07:00 and 19:00 This varied from an average occupancy of 8 during the morning peak (07:00 to 09:30) and 10 during the inter-peak (09:30 to 15:30) to 15 in the evening peak (15:30 to 18:30) Bus trips passing through the survey cordon What was their average occupancy?

  26. 57% walked from their alighting station 15% caught a bus 13% caught a tram 8% caught another train Other modes were car - picked up (2%) and cycle (1%) Rail trips passing through the survey cordon How did people get to their destination from the train?

  27. On average each car had 1.48 occupants Occupancy varied very little during the day 70% of cars had no passengers in the morning peak Car trips passing through the survey cordon What was their average occupancy?

  28. 62% of all goods vehicle journeys through the cordon finish in Rochdale 66% of LGVs and 53% of MGVs finish their journey in Rochdale 42% of lorries with 3 or more axles finish their journeys outside Greater Manchester Commercial Vehicles passing through the survey cordon Where are they going?
