Theodore Boone: The Abduction By: John GrishamPublished: June 7, 2011genre : Mystery fiction PowerPoint by: Taryn Spriggs
Setting: • This story occurred in present- day Strattenburg, this city is fictional. • April has been abducted here. She has lived in this city her whole life. There were many clues in this specific setting that helped solve the crime. • This novel would be very different if it occurred in another setting because it would have nothing to do with April or her background.
Characters: Theodore Boone- Theodore Boone is a thirteen year old boy with brown hair and brown eyes. He is at an average height level. He is very friendly because Theo is always nice to people. Curious is another adjective that describes him because in the book he is always wondering about his friend April. Theodore is very intelligent in solving problems because he is always the main one solving the crimes that occur in Strattenburg. April Finnemore- April Finnemore is another main character is this story. She is also thirteen. She has brown hair and green eyes. Theo (Theodore) stated that she dresses more like a boy than a girl in the book. She is also at an average height level. April is very introverted; she is quiet and shy most of the time in this story. Another adjective that describes April is fearful. She is very frightened in the book while she has been home by herself for three days straight. April is also very alert. She is always watchful for trouble or unusual things to happen.
Conflict: • April was taken from her bedroom in the middle of the night! The person who took her IS UNKNOWN. She felt very unsafe when she was at home by herself because she was there for almost a week! POLICE INVESTIGATE AND FIND OUT THAT APRIL ACTUALLY WENT WITH THE KIDNAPPER! • This conflict best fits in the category under Man vs. Man.
Summary of Plot: • April Finnemore has been abducted in present- day Strattenburg! Police capture and investigate on her distant cousin, Jack Leeper, who escaped from California Jail, but later find out that he has nothing to do with the abduction! Theodore and his uncle, Ike, set out to find April, but do they ever return back with her safe?
Theme: You always feel safe with your parents around. • “ ‘I don’t know Judge. I just don’t know. I took April last week because she was scared to death and we had no idea where May,’” April’s mother, “ ‘was.’” – Mr. Finnemore (April’s father) • “ ‘April wants to be at home with her parents, but I’m not sure her parents want to be home with her.’” –Mrs. Boone (Theo’s mother) • “ ‘Well, Judge, what I want is something that’s impossible. I want what every kid wants– a normal home and a normal family. But that’s not what I have.’” –April Finnemore
Point of View: • This novel is told in third person limited narrative. The author only expresses the feelings of Theo and no one else, but he is telling how Theo feels while he tells the book in the third person. This helps the reader understand how Theo is feeling in different types of situations in the story. This would be different if it was told in first person narrative because the story would be told from Theo's point of view. It would also be different if the story was told in third person omniscient because the author would express the feelings of more than just one character.
Symbolism: • April’s parents symbolize her safety. In the book, it was stated that she felt safer with her parents around, in their own home. citation: http://cutcaster.com/
Recommendation: • This book is worth reading because it will keep you guessing until the end. You will not find out what really happened until you finish reading. This novel is a mystery fiction. It’s about Theo’s friend, April Finnemore, who has been abducted by someone she knows. Police capture and investigate on her distant cousin ,and pen pal, Jack Leeper, but find out that he has nothing to do with her abduction. Theo sets out with his uncle, Ike, to find April, but do they? This book is very interesting, with it being a mystery. I really enjoyed reading this novel.
