LISD Philosophy Lovejoy I.S.D. believes that all children can learn and is dedicated to quality instruction at all abilitylevels.To insure that this occurs, Lovejoy will provide gifted and talented services that include differentiated curricula that are both advanced and enriched for students identified as exceptional learners.

  3. Definition Gifted and talented students are those who excel consistently or who show the potential to excel in any one or combination of the following areas: - general aptitude, - creative and productive thinking and ability,

  4. Definition (cont.) - leadership ability, - ability in the visual and performing arts, and -psychomotor ability. This definition is compatible with that of the State Board of Education as published by the Texas Education Agency in its report entitled, The Texas State Plan and Guidelines for the Gifted/Talented.

  5. Identification for GT services Must meet 3 of 4 criteria at 96%: 1. Aptitude (readiness) 2. Achievement (knowledge) 3. Reasoning (fluid intelligence) 4. Teacher Observation (performance and characteristics) Parent Letter of Referral is used for placement consideration.

  6. Elementary services

  7. K-2 Services Enrichment: Creative thinking and critical thinking skills, taught to the entire class by the GT teacher Pull-Out: Interdisciplinary units - accelerated and enriched taught by GT teacher

  8. K-2 Services Time in Pull-out: Kindergarten = 90 min./week (begins March 1st) 1st grade = 3 hrs./week 2nd grade = 4 hrs./week

  9. 3rd Grade Services GT Math: - accelerated and enriched - 90 min. per day GT Integrated Studies: - curriculum includes language arts and social studies/history - 90 min. per day GT teacher is teacher of record in IDed area.

  10. 4th & 5th Grade Services GT Math: - accelerated and enriched - 90 min. per day GT Integrated Studies: - curriculum includes language arts and social studies/history - 140 min. per day GT teacher is teacher of record in IDed area.

  11. Middle School

  12. Foundation Cores – GT Classes GT Math: - enriched and accelerated - 6th – Pre-Algebra - 7th - Algebra 1 - 8th - Geometry

  13. Foundation Cores – GT Classes GT Science - problem/project -based learning (open-ended, “fuzzy”) If IDed in Math in 5th grade – placed in both GT Math & GT Science in 6th grade Science & Math – joint projects

  14. Foundation Cores – GT Classes GT English: enriched and accelerated PreAP GT Social Studies / History: enriched and accelerated Pre-AP If in GT Integrated Studies in 5th grade placed in both GT English & GT Social Studies / History in 6th grade

  15. High School

  16. PreAP – AP Levels of classes, weighted classes: Tier 1 – AP (5.0) Tier 2 – PreAP, Independent Studies, Senior Project (4.5) Tier 3 – Electives (4.0) GT sections are available at the highest tier offered for foundation courses

  17. English 9th grade: PreAP/GT English 1 10th grade: PreAP/GT English 2 11th grade: AP/GT English 3 (Language) 12th grade: AP/GT English 4 (Literature)

  18. Social Studies/History 9th grade: PreAP/GT World Geography 10th grade: AP/GT World History 11th grade: AP/GT U.S. History 12th grade: AP Government AP Macroeconomics AP Government AP Psychology AP European History

  19. Mathematics 9th grade: PreAP/GT Algebra II 10th grade: PreAP/GT Pre-Calculus 11th – 12th grades: AP /GT Calculus AB AP/GT Calculus BC AP/GT Statistics

  27. Creatively Gifted Students identified through portfolio assessment Served through Independent Studies with Fine Arts mentorship

  28. Important Dates Deadline for referrals for 2nd semester 2010-11 placement: November 5, 2010; 4 p.m. Deadline for Kindergarten referrals: January 7, 2011, 4 p.m. Deadline for start of the 2011-12 School Year: May 6, 2011, 4 p.m.
