Deer Lakes High School Housing grades nine through twelve, Deer Lakes High School is equipped with over 55 classrooms, library, cafeteria, auditorium, computer learning labs and a gymnasium with a swimming pool. All classrooms have interactive Promethean boards and projectors connected to the teacher’s computer to provide both teacher and student hands on access to online videos, blogs, newsfeeds, etc. Our fine arts and technology education departments features a music theory room along with band and chorus, two art studios with kiln and pottery rooms, a TV broadcasting studio along with metal and wood shops. All of this provides our students with not only the opportunity to achieve in the core academics but also allows our students to flourish in areas outside of math, English, social studies and science.

Then… • All the previous items, plus: • Get involved in clubs, activities and attend extra-curricular events. • Carry and utilize your student handbook. • Listen to the morning announcements. • Pay attention and ask for extra help. • Study the details for tests and begin studying a week ahead of time, doing a little bit of preparation every day/evening. • Take notes and review them daily. • Be yourself • Be enthusiastic about being a Lancer
Additionally: • Get to know and utilize all of the staff members in the building. • School calendar years are unique, they offer time off with a new beginning, this is your chance to make any changes. • Separate yourself from “Reality Television” and set positive standards for your use of Social Media (Face Book). • Set goals for yourself based on what you aspire to do after high school, formulate a plan to get to that goal and then; • WORK THE PLAN • REFINE THE PLAN • WORK THE REFINED PLAN • CELEBRATE YOUR SUCCESSES ALONG THE WAY • GET BACK TO WORKING THE PLAN
Schedule of Daily Routine • Reading your schedule; • 6 Day Rotation, your schedule will display what day of the rotation your class is on. • Classes are 40 minutes long. You have 4 minutes in between classes • Lunch is periods 5,6 & 7. • School Year Broken into 4 quarters. • Report to Homeroom at 7:45. • Room #’s • 200’s – 2nd floor • 100’s – 1st • When you arrive to school you will report to Cafeteria, you will then be dismissed to homeroom by the bell.
Schedule/Daily Routine Cont. • Don’t be worried about lunch/find a friend that has same lunch and you can sit down at any open table. You will be dismissed by staff to get into the lunch line. • Make time to use your lockers through the day. • Buses leave in two different runs. 1st run leaves at 2:39. 2nd run leaves at 2:45. • Make sure you know your bus number, you will have the same bus in the afternoon that picks you up in the morning.
Keystone Exams • Keystone Exams replaced the PSSA Exams. • Keystone Exams are exit(final)exams given in Algebra I, Biology, and English Lit (10th grade) • Keystone Exams will be given in May. • As the year moves on we will provide you with more information regarding the Keystone Exams. • Keystone Exams must be passed for students to graduate, any student that is not proficient will be placed in a remediation program.
Be Aware Of; • Advanced Placement Courses (AP) • AP Test at end of year is NOT required, but is highly recommended. • AP test is cost will be reimbursed by school if you score high enough. • AP Scores & College Credit • Dual Enrollment Classes • High School courses that give college credit. • College opportunities exist for juniors and seniors. Deer Lakes has partnerships with IUP, CCAC, Slippery Rock, to name afew • Deer Lakes Lancer Academy • A variety of online classes offered through a program called Edgenuity.
Rules & Policies – THE BASICS • If you arrive to school after 7:45am and/or leave before 2:35pm. • You must do so through the Attendance Window. • Have official note (with contact phone#) • School absences - Use the call off line 724-265-5320 option #1 • What the state allows;(Illness, death in family, court, or family emergency. • On 1st day back, note is due to HR teacher. • After 3rd day excuses can only be approved by building principals. • Work will not be accepted from teachers on days students have an unexcused absence. • Vacations need prior approval, form in main office and online at deerlakes.net • Must have hall pass if not in class during class time.
Rules Continued • If it is against the law, you can’t do it here as well. • Tobacco, Tobacco-like products, fighting, profanity, etc. • Dress Code Basics; • No hats, hoods, headbands, bandanas, etc. • No displays on clothing/body that are suggestive, obscene, have profane/vulgar wording or graphics, or promote drugs, alcohol or tobacco products. • Pants, shorts and skirts are to be worn at the waist line. • Shorts and skirts are to be at knee length. • No tank-tops or less allowed. • Clothing is to be clean and in good repair, without visible holes, rips or tears • No student visitors. • No Hazing/Bullying
Potential Disciplinary Assignments • After- School Detention • 2:40pm – 3:40 pm • Saturday Detention • 8:30am –12:00 am Saturday mornings • Out – 0f – School Suspension • Citation & Fines • Social Suspension/Loss of privileges • Alternative Educational Placement • Combinations of the above

Just; • Be nice/respectful • Use proper manners (“Excuse me, Thank you) • Get enough Sleep • Eat green vegetables • Hug your parents and loved ones often. • Make your bed daily • Smile and make eye contact • Admit to your mistakes and take corrective action right away • If you would not tell your parents about it right away; • DO NOT DO IT! – IT IS WRONG and INAPPROPRIATE • Set your goals and work the plan to get you to that point • Stay positive and persistent.
