Class Ring Memorial Program 31 West Point rings are donated and melted. All but a portion is added to the amalgam for the USMA Class of 2002. 31 graduates are immortalized. 19 rings & legacy gold are added to Class of 2003 rings. The legacy grows to 50. 18 rings & legacy gold are added to Class of 2004 rings. The legacy grows to 69. 12 rings & legacy gold are added to Class of 2005 rings. The legacy grows to 82. 11 rings & legacy gold are added to Class of 2006 rings. The legacy grows to 93. 12 rings and the legacy gold are melted. All but a portion is added to your rings – USMA Class of 2007. The legacy grows to 105.
Colonel Norman Lankenau Class of 1932 • Infantry • During WWII, served with 71st INF DIV • Commanded 14th Infantry Regiment • Bronze Star, French Croix de Guerre • Retired in 1952 after 20 yrs of service Born 9 Feb 1910 in Ohio. Died 1 Sept 1979 at age 69
Colonel Clayton Mullins Class of 1933 • Infantry and Corps of Engineers • During WWII, served on Engineer Board, and at HQ, Air Force Pacific Ocean Area. • Legion of Merit, Bronze Star • Retired in 1946 after 13 yrs of service Born 24 July 1909 in Louisiana. Died 25 June 2002 in Athens, Georgia, at age 92.
Colonel James “Trapper” Drum Class of 1937 • Infantry • During WWII, company commander in 2nd Bn, 334th INF, with the British Army • Severely wounded in Geilenkirchen, GE • Retired in 1944 with 7 years of service, a Purple Heart, British DSO, and Silver Star Born 4 June 1915 in Chicago. Died 15 Dec 2002 in Essex, Connecticut, at age 87.
Colonel Alan Seff Class of 1938 • Coastal Artillery Corps • During WWII, commanded a battalion in 98th Anti-aircraft Arty Group in Hawaii, and then Army Forces in Gilbert Islands • Retired from active duty in 1947, and remained in Reserves until 1953 Born 15 Oct 1915 in NY. Died 10 Feb 2003 in New York City at age 87.
Colonel Oscar Duttweiler, Jr. Class of 1944 • Infantry • During WWII, served with 87th Infantry Regt, 10th Mountain DIV • During Vietnam, served with HQ, Military Assistance Command • Silver Star, 2 Bronze Stars, Purple Heart, 3 Legions of Merit, & the CIB. • Retired in 1973 after 29 yrs of service Born 11 Dec 1920 in New Jersey. Died 10 Jan 2005 in Tampa, FL, at age 84.
2LT Edward McCarron & Dr. Alfred Hero Class of 1945 • 2LT Edward McCarron died in a car accident in Japan, 1946. In his memory, Alfred wore his classmate’s ring. • Both were Infantrymen • Left active duty in 1953 • World Peace Foundation for 29 years Born in Louisiana on 7 Feb 1924. Died 20 Jan 2006 in Ann Arbor, MI, at age 81.
Lieutenant Colonel Marvin Price Class of 1945 • Infantry • First assignment – Korea • Earned Masters of Science at Princeton and taught Electrical Engineering at USMA • Served in Vietnam with Military Advisory Group, 1961-62 • Retired in 1966 after 21 years of service Born 9 March 1923 in Arkansas. COL Price is a Living Donor.
William Gustafson Class of 1949 • Commissioned in the Air Force • First assignment – Support Squadron, 20th Air Force, Okinawa, during Korean War • Earned Bronze Star • Left service in 1953 Born 21 Jan 1927 in Michigan. Died 26 Dec 2004 in Pasadena, CA, at age 77.
Colonel John DiGrazia, Jr. Class Of 1950 • Infantry for 2 yrs, then Ordnance Corps • Commanded 76th Ordnance Detachment in Turkey; 101st Ordnance Bn; 59th Ordnance Group; and Sierra Army Depot • Served in HQ, U.S. Army, Republic of Vietnam, 1971-72 • 5 Legions of Merit, Joint Services Commendation Medal • Retired in 1979 after 29 yrs of service Born 4 Feb 1928 in Nevada. COL DiGrazia is a Living Donor. His nephew, CDT Daniel Fisher, is a member of Class of 2007.
Francis Vernon Gay Class of 1953 • Commissioned in the Air Force • Left service and pursued a law degree at Duke University • Practiced law for 28 yrs with former Academy roommate and law partner, Egerton Van den Berg Born 9 Aug 1930 in Arizona. Died 14 Sept 2004 in Prescott, AZ, at age 74.
Lieutenant Colonel Edmund “Buzz” Burhans II Class of 1956 • Commissioned in the Air Force • Aircraft Commander in both 772nd Troop Carrier Squadron and 463rd Troop Carrier Wing • Served in Vietnam, 1965-1966, earning Air Medal and Commendation Medal • Air Force Liaison Officer at USMA • After final assignments in Texas, retired in 1976 with 20 yrs of service Born 2 July 1934 in Kingston, New York. Died 3 Jan 2004 in Woodstock, NY, at age 70.
Colonel Paul Francis Parks Class of 1955 • Artillery • Commanded batteries in 44th Anti-Aircraft Missile Bn and 2nd Observation Bn, 25th FA • Earned Masters from Univ. of Mainz and taught German during 2 tours at USMA • Earned Bronze Star while serving in HQ, 1st Field Forces, Vietnam, 1968-69 • Commanded 3rd Bn, 6th ADA • Retired in 1979 with 24 yrs of service Born 21 May 1934 in Massachusetts. COL Parks is a Living Donor.
