The University of Texas at Dallas • Emphasis on growth • 2011 enrollment was 19,000 • Largest freshman class ever • Gifts and donations set new record in 2011 ($55M) • More than $6M spent on new buildings and infrastructure
University Growth (cont.) • Since 2005, UTD has hired 211 tenured and tenure-track faculty • UTD plans to add 200 more tenured and tenure-track faculty in the next 10 years. • FY2011 Research Expenditures: ~$94M • An increase of 14% over FY2010
NIH Fiscal Policy for Grant Awards FY2012* • FY 2012 Funding Levels: • Non-competing awards will be issued without cost of living/inflationary adjustments; • Inflationary Increases for Future Years: • Will be discontinued for all competing and noncompeting research grant awards issued in FY 2012; • Overall effort is to keep average size of grants consistent to the FY2011 levels or lower; *Slide from NCURA Region IV presentation
NIH (cont.)FY2012 • NIH R&D budget increased less than 1% from FY2011 • Salary cap reduced for all NIH grants.
NSF Funding Rates • FY2011 – 22% of proposals submitted were awarded. • Statistics show proposal submissions are increasing while awards are decreasing. • NSF accounts for approximately 4% of the federal R&D budget.

Our Mission To coordinate the preparation, submission and management of externally funded research projects, educate researchers about funding opportunities and sponsor policies, and negotiate terms for research contracts.
Contracts vs. Grants • OSP recently transitioned to split grants and contracts. • Specialists will process either grants or contracts – not both. • Allows for personnel to become more specialized.
