Bamidbar/Numbers 25:10 – 30:1 “Zeal for the Lord” Pinchas (Phinehas)
Who is Pinchas/Phinehas? • Aaron and his sons were anointed kohanim • Their children born afterwards would automatically become kohanim Aaron Eleazar Pinehas
Pinchas/Phinehas the Kohen • Born before Aaron and his sons were anointed kohanim • Phinehas earned his priesthood because of his zeal for the LORD
The Story • Israel worshiped other gods • The LORD was not happy • HE ordered all the leaders to be punished
The Story • A man called Zimri committed a grave sin • Phinehas thought only about the will of the LORD • Phinehas killed Zimri with a spear
Numbers 25:10-13 10 Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, 11 Phinehas the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, has turned away My wrath from the sons of Israel in that he was jealous with My jealousy among them, so that I did not destroy the sons of Israel in My jealousy. 12 Therefore say, 'Behold, I give him My covenant of peace; 13 and it shall be for him and his descendants after him, a covenant of a perpetual priesthood, because he was jealous for his God and made atonement for the sons of Israel.
What is Jealousy? • Jealousy can be both bad and good. • In Exodus 20:5a, God said, "You shall not bow down to [idols] or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God • In the Torah Jealousy is equated with Zeal for the Lords ways and reputation Do the Zealous for the Lord Activity here
Who is Lord? • God must be first, or Lord, or boss of our lives • Phinehas teaches us that the LORD must be Lord in our lives
Yeshua and Cleansing the Temple • Yeshua saw people doing business in the temple • “Zeal for Your house has eaten Me up”
