  1. Science & TechnologySMT 310 • Prerequisite: Completion of lower division General Education. • An assessment of the interrelationships of Science and Technology. Study of the development of technological advances and the scientific principles behind them.

  2. SMT 310 • Based on James Burke’s book “Connections” and videos from the series. • Lectures are PowerPoint presentations • Lectures, documents, assignments and grades on Blackboard.

  3. James Burke’s “Connections” Any edition works just fine. Available for sale or rent in the Book Store.

  4. “Readings in Science and Technology” • Optional “Yellow Book” • Published here on campus • Purchase in bookstore about $20

  5. James Burke’s Connections • Each chapter devoted to one major technology development. • Atomic Energy, Computers, Plastics, Television, Telecommunications, Air Transportation, Liquid Fuel Rockets and the Assembly Line. • Chapters based on unrelated themes which come together to make new technology. • Louis CK

  6. Connections Videos • Each chapter in Connections has a video presentation shown in class. • Videos also available on YouTube via Blackboard & in the Library.

  7. Syllabus • Get it in Documents in Blackboard • Read it! • Quiz #1 is based on the Syllabus and is available to take now. You must have completed before first exam.

  8. Outline • Also in Documents on Blackboard • Print it out • It tells you reading assignments, lecture and exam dates.

  9. Blackboard • From campus site go to bottom of page click on Blackboard. • Enter your MyCSUDH Username and Password. • Blackboard

  10. NXT “Clicker” • Log into Blackboard • Select this course • Select Tools • Select TurningPoint Registration Tool. • Enter device ID • 6 digit alphanumeric • 0 is number zero only • Re-enter and submit

  11. Purchase or Rent your NXT Card • Purchase at bookstore for all courses and return to book store for credit when your done with your education at CSUDH. • Make certain batteries are good before you accept or use it. They use two AAA batteries.

  12. Downloading Lectures • On Blackboard • Click on lecture you wish to download then Click on Download to save it to your disc. • DO NOT print the lecture out in this format. • Instead, select Preview inside PowerPoint to change to three slides per page and Grayscale.

  13. Prepare for lecture • Brief each chapter before lecture. • Bring b/w PowerPoint lecture to class • Write lecture notes onto PowerPoint slides • Keep a notebook. • Read assignments in “Readings” and handouts. • Studying a little each day is much better than “cramming” the night before the exam.

  14. Blackboard Quizzes • Inside Assignments on Blackboard • Based on lecture, video and reading materials. • Worth about 2 points each. • Must be completed online before due date. • Must complete each question before progressing to the next.

  15. Your Grade • Based on exams, quizzes and attendance. • Two of three midterms plus final exam. • 12 quizzes completed online on Blackboard • Class attendance via your “clicker” activity. • No make-ups for missed tests or assignments. • There is no extra credit. • Course grade is based on your best two midterm exams, quizzes, clicker attendance and final exam.

  16. Preparing for Exams • Complete quizzes before due date. • Due midnight before exam date. • Complete all reading assignments • Review all lecture notes and videos. • Go to Exam Preparation page on Blackboard • Answer all trial exam questions posted on website.

  17. Exams • Exams based on all material covered since last exam. • Bring your “clicker”!!! • No make-ups for missed exams. • There is no extra credit. • Final Exam must count toward your final grade.
