British Army • Advantages • Well trained, well disciplined • Skilled marksmen • Skilled in use of bayonet • *Plenty of supplies, ammunition • Disadvantages • *Farm away from Britain (where supplies are) • Convicts, extreme lower class fighting • Fight for pay for a foreign country (Hessians)
Leader • Cornwallis • Allies • Hessians- Professional German soldiers hired to fight due to soldier shortages • Strategies • Gentleman’s Warfare- large groups face to face. Take shots 1st, then hand to hand w/ bayonet. Soldiers well trained in both.
Continental Army (colonies) • Advantages • Fighting for own home, land, country/for a cause • *Strong leadership • *Know the landscape • Skilled at guerrilla-type warfare • Disadvantages • Sign up for a short term of service (Only had to enlist 6 months-1 year) • Not professional or well trained • Used many primitive weapons (Short on supplies- had to use bows and arrows at times) • Provide own equipment= supply shortages • Resist training and discipline.
Leadership • George Washington • Allies • France- sent soldiers to fight w/ Continental Army, sent navy to blockade British ships w/ supplies. • Strategies • Guerilla Warfare- not skilled enough for Gentleman’s warfare so use hit-and-run method, fight from trees, swamps, etc.
Why did Colonists win? • Motivation • Effective allies (French) • British got cut off from supplies
