Background • NUCSL is a cooperative of 200 fruit farmers based in the central part of Uganda • 2006- Outsourced drying of pineapples and sent samples to Austria- Quality well received • 2007- Received grant from government to construct own fruit drying factory • 2009- Received funding from Swiss Contact for organic conversion with AE as service provider
Brief Analysis Weaknesses • No food safety plan in place in factory • Available market for only one quarter of what the farmers’ produce Opportunities • Potential market- UK, Germany, Italy, France and Holand largest importers of dried fruit and vegetables • Increased consumer awareness about healthy living
Purpose • Project will enable NUCSL factory produce high quality dry fruit that can be marketed in the EU for high returns
Goal and Objectives • Ultimately, aims at improving livelihoods of NUCSL farmers by linking them to sustainable markets This will be achieved by • Improving product quality by setting up and implementing HACCP plan for NUCSL factory • Developing Market strategies to increase exposure in EU market and create business partnerships

Criteria for success • HACCP certificate by end 2011 • At least 2 new business partners by end 2011 • Exports of at least 80% of farmer produce to the EU by 2012
