Purposes of the Treaty: • Bring an end to the state of war between Austria-Hungary and the Allies during WWI. • To permanently dismantle the Austro-Hungarian monarchy and keep Austria from ever allying with Germany. • To bring independence to Yugoslavia, Poland, Hungary, and Czechoslovakia.
The Terms of the Treaty: • Signed between Austria and the Allies • The Hapsburg Empire was forced to dissolve • Contained the League of Nations • The Recognition of the independence of Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Poland, and Yugoslavia • Austria lost the lands of Southern Tyrol, Trieste, Trintino, Istria, several Dalmatian lands, and Friuli to Italy • Austria lost Bukovina to Romania and Galicia to Poland • Austria was awarded Burgenland, formerly part of Hungary.
More terms of the Treaty: • Assumed responsibility of the Austrian Imperial government for starting the war • Reparations were to be paid to the Allies • Was forbade from uniting with Germany in any way, including politically and economically without the agreement of council within the League of Nations • The Austrian army force was limited to 30,000 volunteers • Enforced numerous provisions dealing with the break-up of the Austria-Hungarian empire such as Danubian navigation and the transfer of railroads
Effects of the Treaty: • Austria was resentful of the treaty because they would lost large amounts of land and power. • States like Czechoslovakia, Yugoslavia, Poland, and Hungary gained independence. • Austria had to surrender Eastern Galicia, the Trentino, South Tyrol, Trieste, Istria, several Dalmatian islands and Bukovina. • Austria was awarded part of Hungary. • Treaty was violated in 1936 when Austria reconstructed their army.
