  1. The Outsiders Author: S.E. Hinton Published: 1967 Genre: Realistic Fiction

  2. Setting: • The story took place in a suburb like area. It was very cold and there were two main gangs, the greasers and the Socs. • Without the details you wouldn’t know what the book was about and how hard it was to survive.

  3. Characters: • Ponyboy was hardworking, creative, and kind. He always wanted to do the right thing, and never wanted to get in trouble. • Ponyboy was physically fit for his age, had long dark hair, and fair-skinned. • Johnny was kind, sometimes nervous, and independent. He always wanted someone to be proud of him and love him, because he didn’t get a lot of attention at home. • Johnny was physically fit, had long greasy-like hair, and pale skin.

  4. Conflict: The conflict of the story was when Johnny killed Bob, so that Ponyboy wouldn’t drown, and they went on the run from the police.

  5. Summary: • In “The Outsiders” there were two main gangs called the Greasers and the Socs. The Greasers and the Socs always were enemies and got in fights. One night Ponyboy and Johnny were watching a movie with two nice girls Cherry and Marie (socs). The girl’s boyfriends got mad since they were drunk and tried to kill Ponyboy and Johnny. Johnny killed one of the Socs and began going on the run from the police, and instead of fugitives they became heroes.

  6. Theme: • The theme for this book would be: You have to go through the rain before you reach the rainbow, and that means you have to get through the bad before you get to the good. When Ponyboy and Johnny were fugitives they saved some kids from a fire and came back as heroes. Ponyboy became closer to his brother and Jonny found what he always had hoped for.

  7. Point of view: • The point of view this book is told in was 1st person. If it wasn’t in first person you wouldn’t know the main character Ponyboy’s feelings and thoughts.

  8. Recommendation: • Though the book started out slow in the beginning, it gradually got better when it got to about the middle. It taught me some lessons and I recommend others to read it. It had action in it which made me want to keep reading it, and I think others will feel the same way.
