National School Nurse Day May 6, 2009 We are very fortunate to have registered nurses at all Sunnyside District schools. We would like to thank our nurses for the exceptional service they provide to students and employees.
Dollars for Scholars On May 7, 61 graduating seniors from Sunnyside District high schools were awarded $73,500 in scholarships as part of the Alumni Association’s Dollars for Scholars program.
Lifetime Achievement Award Sunnyside High School Principal Raúl Nido was honored with the Crystal Apple Lifetime Achievement Award from the Metropolitan Education Commission.
Thank you, State Farm State Farm presented $22,000 to SUSD schools at the May 7 District Parent Council meeting. Each school will receive $1,000 to fund laptop computers for two teachers.
Bilingual Essay Contest Liberty Elementary School student Zcheecid Aguirre is the winner of the elementary level 2009 English-Spanish Bilingual Essay Contest sponsored by the Arizona Association for Bilingual Education (AABE). Zcheecid received a $100 prize and is eligible for the national essay contest.
Multicultural Calendar The artwork of STAR Academic Center art teacher Roberta Lewis has been selected to appear on the cover of the 2010 Multicultural Calendar, a publication of the Global Art Project.
Parent Engagement going strong • College Academy for Parents celebrated the graduation May 7 at the University of Arizona of 90 parents from 62 families. • Parents expressed very positive responses to a survey on this year’s District Parent Council. On average, 80 parents attended each meeting. • Sunnyside High School hosted 616 parents and students from Apollo and Sierra middle schools on April 29 for Eighth Grade Parent Orientation.

GEAR UP student authors A book signing on May 7 at Sunnyside High celebrated the publication of the book, “Believe in Me,” a compilation of personal success stories from the Class of 2012 as part of the GEAR UP program.
