5 SIMPLE VISUAL INSPECTIONS TIPS 1. Forks and Mast 2. Mast Channels, Lift Chains & Cylinders Check the mast channels for any welds or cracks that could affect the masts structural reliability. Do you notice any extreme wear on mast rollers? Check the length of the lift chains – anchor pins or links shouldn’t be missing or damaged. Check the hoses that run parallel to the chains - if you find any type of leak, it is potentially hydraulic fluid. The channels and chains shouldn’t show any noticeable differences from one side to the other side. Check that there are no missing or insecure bolts from the length of chains & hoses to tilt cylinders (fixed to the forklift carriage). • Look at the front side of the forklift. Do you notice any bends, cracks, or other kinds of distortion? The forks should be replaced if any irregularities are found. • Check the mast and fork heels thoroughly for any signs of wear, cracks, or welds. The thickness of heel forks & upright fork shank should match closely. • Look at the hydraulic cylinders - light lubrication is normal, but watch out for leaks. • Check that the mast pins, tilt & side shift cylinders is in secure condition.

The seat must be secure & set into its position. If the seat is torn, get it replaced else, it can limit operator’s movement. Always start the engine & ensure the drive, steering, and braking operations are all working in good condition! Listen for any odd sounds in the engine. Test the hydraulic operation controls & try each function of the mast – up, down, left, right, & tilt. If there’s any excessive movement in the mast, it indicates wearing in the bushes & bearings. Drive the forklift in a figure 8 pattern - forwards and backwards, stopping and starting it often – to test the responsiveness of the steering & braking. Check if the service brake & the parking brake work correctly. Ensure the gauges function rightly & check all the controls work correctly, especially all the safety features! Check the rating plate & load chart. • Be it a frame or fully enclosed operator cabin, check for any bending or damage to the guards. • DON’T buy a second-hand forklift if you find any sign of welding & repairs made in the overhead as it has been structurally compromised & is now unsafe. • Ensure all the panels & windows are secure and undamaged if forklift has an enclosed cabin. • Check the tyres & ensure all the bolts are secure.

Check the engine parts to ensure there are no cracks, leaks, broken hoses, or obvious damage. Check all the fluids & oils. • Check the condition of the belts; ensure it’s tight & not overly cracked. • Check the battery connections & air filters. Check rest of the engine’s condition. • If you’re looking at an electric powered forklift – you’ll need to check that the charging plugs are in good condition and the battery included is operating. Check if batteries are still in the warranty period. • On LPG forklifts, ensure the bracket is secure at the back & the bolts are secure. Check the exhaust guard; assess any damage & inspect the rear. • Ensure that the counterweights bolts are firmly in position.
