  5. Key Concepts • 2 party System • We discourage 3rd parties • Liberals vs. Conservative • Each party forms a consensus (agreement) on issues • 3rd Parties • Minor • Ideology focused (socialist party) • Single issue (prohibitionist party) • Ideology-Set of beliefs (gov’t)

  8. Political Parties around the World • Most European nations have a multiparty system. • Many major and minor parties • Many form coalitions (temporary alliances) • Dictatorship • 1 major party • Ex. Communist, Fascist

  9. Party Structure (Generic) • Organization • National committee- representatives from each states decide focus of party • Raise funds, form consensus, convention • Must have faithful voters/support (party electorate) • Must have a party in government (elected)

Roles of Parties • Nominate Candidates • Form a consensus • Platform: Statements of the party’s belief • Plank: each part of the platform (specific beliefs) • Serve as a bonding agent to the people • Partisanship: Enacting a party’s ideology through legislation. • For example, an environmentalist will vote for Obama due to his plans on “going green”.
