California Teacher Preparation • Three types of teaching credentials • General Education- Multiple Subject and Single Subject • Education Specialist-in 7 Specialty Content Areas: MM, MS, ECSE, DHH, VI, PHI, LAD • Career Technical Education- in specified industry sector
Basic Requirements All must complete fingerprint/character review process Gen Ed and Spec Ed must hold BA/BS, Basic Skills Requirement and Subject Matter Requirement CTE must have 3+ years experience in industry sector
Gen Ed and Spec Ed Complete Commission-approved program including coursework and fieldwork May be earned through traditional program w/student teaching or an intern program
Coursework Gen Ed and SpEd: Must complete coursework on understanding diversity, maintaining a healthy learning environment, and using technology Must include subject matter or specialty content area pedagogy Must complete coursework and fieldwork supporting English learners
Coursework (continued) Complete coursework and fieldwork on teaching reading, and pass the Reading Instruction Competency Assessment (RICA)- not required for ECSE Gen Ed teachers must demonstrate ability to plan and teach a lesson, plan, give and analyze assessments on the lesson, and reflect on experience
Fieldwork General Education- Multiple Subject field experience in two grade levels General Education- Single Subject field experience two or more subject- specific teaching assignments Special Education- field experience across the range of age groups and disability categories in credential authorization
Additional Requirements for Special Education Education Specialists must demonstrate knowledge of: -Legal mandates of IEP/IFSPs, -Providing accommodations and modifications, -Collaboration with outside agencies, -Use of assistive technology,
Additional Requirements for Special Education (continued) -Augmentative and alternate communication systems, -Transition Plans, -Assess with norm-referenced tests and interpret results, -Attend to special health needs of students, and -Implement positive behavior systems.
Clear Teaching Credential- Gen Ed & Special Ed Both Gen Ed and Spec Ed teachers must complete an Induction program within 5 years that offers additional support and enhances the participating teachers’ knowledge, skills and abilities through inquiry- based methodology and reflective practice.
Career Technical Education May teach both General Ed and Special Ed students. Preliminary Credential is earned with proof of 3 years of experience in one of the industry sectors. Must complete an Early Orientation in the first months of school, and the Preliminary program within 3 years.
CTE Preparation 135 hour of coursework-must include field supervision Include instruction on teaching English learners and an authorization for Specially Designed Academic Instruction in English (SDAIE) Earn a Clear CTE credential after 2 years of teaching with positive evaluations or completion of an Advanced Program
Special Education Teaching Credentials Prior to the 1996 Standards, all Special Education teachers were required to hold a Gen Ed teaching credential prior to earning the SpEd credential. With the 1996 Standards, the SpEd credential became an initial teaching credential
Level I and Level II Between 1996 and 2010, Education Specialist preparation was organized into Level I and Level II -Mild to Moderate Disabilities (MM) -Moderate to Severe Disabilities (MS) -Early Childhood Special Education (ECSE) -Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) -Visual Impairments (VI) -Physical and Health Impairments (PHI)
Preliminary Education Specialist Beginning with 2010 Standards-- -Autism is addressed in all Specialty Content Areas and all Preliminary Ed Sp Credential holders earn an authorization to teach students on the Autism Spectrum -Teaching English Learners -New Specialty Content area: Language and Academic Development (LAD)
AASE • To address specific Federal Disability areas, the Commission developed 6 Added Authorizations in Special Education • Autism (ASD) • Deaf Blind (DB) • Emotionally Disturbed (ED) • Other Health Impairments (OHI) • Orthopedically Impaired (OI) • Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)
Additional Authorizations Early Childhood Special Education Added Authorization (ECSE AA) Adapted Physical Education (APE AA) Resource Specialist (RSP AA)
