There are two kinds of elders in the church: teaching elders and ruling elders. See 1 Tim 3:1; 1 Tim 5:17-19; Titus 1:5; Eph. 4:11; Acts 20:28; Heb 13:7 • Both kinds of elders must be able to teach. 1 Tim 3:4; Titus 1:9
Before anyone can teach anything they must taught and trained. An elder must be a student first, and a teacher second. An elder must be willing to study and able to learn the Word of God before he attempts to teach others. All this requires is desire, devotion, and discipline.
Able to teach does not mean an elder must be an eloquent orator, a dynamic speaker, or a highly gifted lecturer. Able to teach means an elder must (1) know the Scriptures (especially the gospel of grace and other apostolic doctrines) and(2) be able to instruct others from them.
Positively, an elder must able to handle the scriptures and teach the word of God to the flock under his care in various settings. Negatively, he must be able to wield the sword of the Spirit to refute whoever and whatever contradicts the gospel (e.g., legalistic religion and cultural myths).
The church is pillar and buttress of the gospel truth (1 Tim 3:15) Demonic doctrines pose a real threat to the life and health of the church (1 Tim 4:1). Legalists (and other heretics) attack grace and appeal to pride (Titus 1:10) Fierce wolves rise up within to destroy the flock (Acts 20:29).
Elders must be able to teach: + Provide God’s people with a steady diet of healthy doctrine. + Protect God’s people from unhealthy doctrine, false teachers, and other cultural and spiritual dangers. “Deal harshly with wolves and gently with sheep.”
Are you skilled in encouraging the saints of different maturity levels in the truths of the scripture? Can you discern and refute error readily? Are you vigilant in the care of those allotted to your charge?
Are you taking any steps to study and equip yourself to discharge your responsibilities to the flock more faithfully? Do you have a solid grasp of the Scriptures, especially the gospel? If called upon could you defend the gospel and explain it from the Word?
If all the men in your church devoted as much time to the word and prayers as you do what would the condition of your church be?
