Shilo • Grant was surprised by the Confederate forces. • His troops suffered heavy losses, (13,000) but survived to win the battle due to Grant’s determination. • Grant’s army is given to Henry Halleck because of Grant’s unorganized style of fighting. • Grant almost quit the army, but his friend William Tecumseh Sherman talked him into staying.

Vicksburg • July, 4 1863 the Confederacy surrenders • On Independence Day • The day after Gettysburg • Gave the Union a lot of confidence.
Lincoln upon hearing about Grant’s victory at Vicksburg said: • "Grant is my man and I am his the rest of the War."
Lincoln likes Grant • Lincoln had become tired of the Union generals’ timidity • Grant was not afraid to take chances • Grant was not afraid to use his army, even if they suffered casualties • Grant uses his larger army to his advantage
Battle of the Wilderness • At the point where most of his predecessors would retreat Grant kept fighting • Grant’s plan was not just to win battles, but to keep the Confederacy constantly fighting to wear them down.
Battle of Spotsylvania • 14 days long • Grant: “I propose to fight it out along this line if it takes all summer.” • General Hancock eventually broke the Confederate line and took 4,000 prisoners. • Grant uses superior numbers and supplies to defeat the South.
