Do cells “think” about the life processes they carry out?

The term autotroph comes from the Greek words autos , meaning “self,” and trophe , meaning “food.” Therefore, an autotroph is an organism that makes food for itself. If heteros means “other,” what does heterotroph mean? A heterotroph is an organism that gets food from others.

  1. The term autotroph comes from the Greek words autos, meaning “self,” and trophe, meaning “food.” • Therefore, an autotroph is an organism that makes food for itself. • If heteros means “other,” what does heterotroph mean? • A heterotrophis an organism that gets food from others.

  2. Do cells “think” about the life processes they carry out? • Cells have no thoughts. • We use words to describe actions that cells do.

  3. What does an ATP molecule consist of? Adenine, ribose, and three phosphate groups. • What do the lines between these parts of the molecule represent? Chemical bonds • What would be the result if the third phosphate group were removed? The remaining molecule would be ADP, and removing the third phosphate group would release energy.

  4. What is the difference between ATP and ADP? • ATP has three phosphate groups; ADP has two.

  5. What happens when a phosphate group is removed from ATP? • ADP is formed, and stored energy is released.
