What Makes up Your Respiratory System? • The upper respiratory tract (system) - includes : nose nasal cavity larynx trachea • The lower respiratory tract (system) - includes : lungs bronchi alveoli
What Do Your Lungs Do? • The lungs take in oxygen • The lungs also get rid of carbon dioxide • The lungs are a pair of cone-shaped organs made up of spongy, pinkish-gray tissue. • They take up most of the space in the chest, or the thorax • The lungs are inside in a membrane called the pleura.
Lungs- Continued… • The lungs are separated from each other by the mediastinum, an area that contains the following: • heart and its large vessels • trachea (windpipe) • esophagus • thymus • lymph nodes
Did you know???? • The right lung has three sections, called lobes. The left lung has two lobes. • When you breathe, the air: • enters the body through the nose or the mouth • travels down the throat through the larynx and trachea • goes into the lungs through main-stem bronchi • one main-stem bronchus leads to the right lung and one to the left lung • in the lungs, the main-stem bronchi divide into smaller bronchi • and then into even smaller tubes called bronchioles • bronchioles end in tiny air sacs called alveoli
Functions • Respiration - delivers oxygen to the cells and removing carbon dioxide from them • Nutrition - carries digested food substances to the cells of the body • Waste Removal - disposes of waste products and poisons that would harm the body if they accumulated • Immunity - helps protect the body from disease • Cellular Communication - the circulatory system provides a mode of transport for hormones • Thermoregulation - the circulatory system transports heat (can both warm and cool body)
Things That Can Go Wrong With YOUR lungs and Respiratory System • Many factors — including genetics, pollutants and irritants, and infectious diseases — can affect the health of your lungs and respiratory system and cause respiratory problems. Problems of the respiratory system that can affect people during their teen years include: • Asthma • Bronchitis • Common Cold • Cough • Cystic Fibrosis • Pneumonia
Although some respiratory diseases like asthma or cystic fibrosis can't be prevented, you can prevent many chronic lung and respiratory illnesses by - avoiding smoking - staying away from pollutants and irritants - washing your hands often to avoid infection - regular medical checkups.
