  2. CLOSED SESSION on Tuesday, 22 may 2001 • 1. Approval of the minutes of the 52nd meeting • 2. Report on the 152nd meeting of the Research Board. • … During a short discussion on CORAL the DG pointed out, as he already had at the SPC, that, due to the already severe strain on the CERN resources, the Management sees no way to make any addition to the existing scientific programme of CERN. Even the pursuit of a major discovery would entail the cancellation of part of the already approved programme. • Slide presented par the SPSC chairman : • … The resources (…), strictly correspond to the approved part of the programme. Any possible extension will have to draw resources at the expenses of the already approved and on-going programme ... • … Recommendation/approval of a new experiment will mean that another on-going experiment will have to stop ... • … Any new experiment must be of the highest scientific quality ... • 3. Status Report on the SPS • - Shut down work : major change in the water cooling system • - Electrical sub stations :2 key dates for tranformers delivery, June 5th and 18 June ; thin margin • - Physics expected to start on July 2nd Report from SPSC meeting - Closed Session (1/4)

  3. 4. Status Report on the PS • - Beam delivered toEast area (7 weeks) and to AD (2 weeks) • - AD, RFQD & Faraday cage status • - Question from C. Détraz : are you designing a slow extraction from AD ? Answer : no • 5. Status Report on the PS and SPS experiments • - DIRAC may run with > 1011p+ after june • - HARP not taking data yet (TPC not ready) ; 61 (or 31 ?) days lost • - “Conflict” between DIRAC and HARP for extra East Area cycles • - NA58 cancelled 2 weeks of beam time at East area (t7) for manpower problems • 6. Addendum to PS214 HARP (SPSC 2001-016/P315 Add.1): I. Brock, A. Magnon • - Request for a 4 week He++ run in East Area (data for atmospheric neutrinos) • - Proposal not precise (quantified) enough; too many questions left open • - SPSC “does not see big scientific interest at such low momenta” • - Collaboration “should concentrate on p+ data taking to the best accuracy” • a Not recommended for approval (only on scientific basis) • 7. Proposal (SPSC 2001-017/P322): I. Brock, A. Magnon • - Use of NA49 detector for better precision in long base line & atmospheric neutrinos calculations • - “Scientific impact for not evident” • - Analysis of systematics errors needs to be adressed • a Not recommended for approval yet, will be reconsidered Report from SPSC meeting - Closed Session (2/4)

  4. 8. Status of NA58 (COMPASS): W. Kühn • - Major progress on all fronts but still 2 reasons of concern (as last year) : • - Magnet (built by Oxford industries) not ready • - A lot of straw detectors are still not available (managerial problem) • a Status report on magnet & straw detector requested for the next SPSC meeting • 9. Status of WA103 (SPSC 2001-015/M665): D. Websdale • - Channelling experiment in West Area • - 8 days requested and recommended for approval • a Recommended for approval • 10. Status of CAST (SPSC 2001-020/M666): A. de Roeck • - CERN Axion Solar detector • - The SPSC “notes progress …” • 11. Status of NA49 (SPSC 2001-008/P264 Add.9): N. Pavlopoulos • - Already approved for 10 days of Pb+ at 20 & 30 GeV/c/u in 2002 • - No particular problem • 12. Progress of NA60 (SPSC 2001-009/M662): A. de Roeck, U. Heinz • - Problem of pixel chips sharing with ALICE • a Status report requested for the next SPSC meeting Report from SPSC meeting - Closed Session (3/4)

  5. 13. Beam time for DIRAC (PS212) • - Where initialy approved for 1998-2001 and have subitted a proposal for 2003-2005 • - The question was raised : are they approved for2002 ? • a SPSC confirms they will run in 2002 • 14. Grey Book listing of analyzing experiments • - Completed experiments will stay in CERN’s list of experiments for 2 years • 15. SPS and PS schedules • - 2x14 days of beam time are available in East Area (t7 & t11) • 16. A.O.B. • SPSC 2001-019/I224 (A Neutrino experiment at the CERN North Area) • - A referee will nominated before SL evaluates what resources are needed • SPSC 2001-021/M667 (COMPASS) • Memo from NA48/2, 10 May 2001, V. Kekelidze. Report from SPSC meeting - Closed Session (4/4)

  6. He++ for HARP in 2002 East Area He+>He++Stripper HARP PSB PS He+ He++ Linac III Linac II (p+) - Protons unavailable for East Area users (& nToF parasitic cycles) during He++ setting-up & data taking- Protons available for other users including nToF (dedicated cycles only)
