Integrating Technology into K-12 Teaching and Learning: Current Knowledge Gaps and Recommendations for Future Research James Nutter
Technology and Integration • Teaching tool since birth of film and computers • Positively affects learning • Computer use can be low level or high level
Barriers of technology integration • Total of 123 in 6 categories (Resources, Institution, Subject Culture, Attitude/Belief, Knowledge/Skill, Assessment) • Lack of Knowledge and Pedagogy is common • Institutional Barriers: Leadership, schedule structure, school planning • Assessment: High stakes testing
Overcoming Barriers • 5 categories of strategies • Having a shared vision and tech integration plan • Overcoming scarcity of resources • Changing attitudes and beliefs • Conducting professional development • Reconsidering assessments
Current knowledge gaps • Two different gaps • Both related to tech integration for instructional purposes • First –order (external to teachers) • Second -order (intrinsic to teachers)
Thoughts • Although this article did a fine job of presenting barriers that prevent the integration of technology into the classroom, it does not give many ways to overcome these obstacles.
