Binomial nomenclature • Bionomial nomenclature is the scientific naming of organisms • Refers to the genus and species • Mosquitoes are classified as belonging to these descriptive categories: • Kingdom – Anamalia • Phylum – Arthropoda • Class – Insecta • Order – Diptera • Family – Culicidae • Various genera and species

Notes • In written documents: • Genus name is capitalized • Genus and the species name are written in italics • The genus is often abbreviated with a two letter designation • In a document, the first time the genus is used, it should be spelled out; thereafter, it can be abbreviated with the two letter designation

Notes • In written documents: • The first time a species is mentioned, it should include the last name of the author who described it and the year it was described • If the author designation is “L.”, it was described by Linnaeus • If the author name and year is in parentheses, it indicates that the current designation is not where it was originally placed
