Article 4- The States and the Federal Government • Article 4 addresses the federal governments relationship with the states. • This is the three protections granted by Article 4 of the Constitution. 1. Each citizen maintains their rights in all states 2. If you commit a crime in a state and flee, you will be brought back 3. Offers the ability to add new states to the Union
Article 5 • Article 5 discusses how changes are going to be made to the Constitution. To change or add to the Constitution is known as amending the Constitution. • How to amend the Constitution 1. 2/3 vote of both the House and Senate 2. ¾ ratification of the 50 state legislatures 3. A New Amendment to the Constitution
Article 6 – The Supremacy Clause • What is the Supremacy Clause? • The Constitution, laws passed by Congress, and treaties of the United States “shall be the supreme law of the land.” • Basically, the federal governments laws will be taken over state laws.
Article 7 – Ratification (the final frontier) • What does it mean to ratify the Constitution? • Ratify means to approve. • 9 states were needed to ratify our Constitution to become the supreme law of our land. The Original Constitution is complete, bring on the amendments.
