Section 2: Cleaning Up Europe • Smog- brown haze that occurs when the gases that are released by burning fossil fuels reacts with sunlight & forms harmful chemicals.

European Union- Post WWII idea began as a trade agreement between a few countries • DON’T WRITE • Grew to idea of community, unify continent so war could no longer tear the continent apart • Goals: Conflict resolution and economic development (compete with USA) • United States of Europe? Problems with that?

So what is the EU? • Don’t Write • Has its own parliament (786 members), bill of rights, court system, currency, flag, anthem, army (Rapid Reaction Force) • Employs 30,000 people and follows 80,000 page legal code/regulations
Don’t Write • Objectives of the EU • Establish European citizenship • Ensure freedom, security and justice • Promote economic and social progress • Assert Europe’s role in the world
