  4. 5th January Edward the Confessor, the King of England dies. These leaves England with a problem, who will be king? There are four candidates: • Harold Godwinson • William of Normandy • Harold Hardrada • Edgar Aethling Back Back End End

  5. 6th January - Morning Edward the Confessor is buried at Westminster Abbey. Edward was known as the Confessor because he was so religious. He had spent much of his reign building the Abbey. Back End

  6. 6th January - Afternoon Harold Godwinson, the earl of Wessex is crowned King of England. Harold was the choice of the Witan (English lords) and had ruled England in all but name after the death of his father in 1051. Back End

  7. 25th September The Battle of Stamford Bridge – Harold Godwinson leads the English in battle against a Viking army led by Harold Hardrada and his brother Tostig. Godwinson wins and thousands are killed. Back End

  8. 28th September The winds change and William is able to sail from Normandy with his army. On the 28th the Normans land at Pevensey. Expecting to be attacked William orders that a castle be built. Back End

  9. 14th October The Battle of Hastings – The Saxon army led by Harold Godwinson line up on Senlac Hill to force a force led by William. After a whole days fighting Harold is killed at William is victorious. Back End

  10. 25th December After being accepted as King by the English lords William is crowned king at Westminster Abbey. An English crowd show up to congratulate their new king but William’s men fearing it was a riot turned their weapons on the crowd. Back End
