  1. By: Skylar Sakis 3rd hour 10-9-13 Welcome to derby middle school There are a few habits you might need to Practice before becoming a 6th grader

  2. Habit #1 (being proactive) • Being proactive means to know what needs to be done and doing it. • You can be proactive when you find out when your book report is due and finishing it in time. • This year, being proactive will help you with many things. You will get good grades and all of you homework assignments finished in time. Being a good student creates a great school environment and reputation for you.

  3. HABIT #2 (BEGINNING WITH THE END IN MIND) • Beginning with the end of mind means to set goal for positive and meaningful things and accomplishing them. • You can begin with the end in mind when you set a goal to finish your graphic novel in a month and doing it. • Beginning with the end in mind is important in 6th grade because accomplishing goals makes you a better learner and achiever. This habit can also make you contribute to your schools mission and vision.

  4. HABIT #3 (PUTTING THINGS FIRST) • Putting things first means to spend time on things that matter most and saying no to things that you shouldn’t do. You also have to be disciplined and organized by making a schedule, setting priorities, and following your plan. • You can be putting things first when you spend time with your friends after your homework and chores are done. • Putting things first sets you up on a good path ahead. It also gives you time to do the most important things first then having time to do fun things after. Routines also come from putting things first.

  5. Habit #4 (think win-win) • I balance courage for getting what I want with consideration for what others want. I make deposits in others Emotional Bank Accounts. When conflicts arise, I look for third alternatives. • When I think win-win everyone gets what they want. This helps not getting into fights and someone loosing out. When someone wants to eat Chinese for dinner and the other wants Mexican they could look for a third alternative and have each one a different night. • #fair @nofights OK

  6. HABIT 5 (SEEK FIRST TO UNDERSTAND) • I listen to other people’s ideas and feelings. I try to see things from other viewpoints. I listen to others without interrupting. I am confident in voicing my ideas. I look people in the eyes when talking. • When you seek first to understand, new ideas can be brought up. Also, people will feel heard and understood. People can seek first to understand when they are doing a project and before they start they discuss from both points of views

  7. Habit 6 (synergize) • I value other people’s strengths and learn from them. I get along with others, even people who are different from me. I work well in groups. I seek out other people’s ideas to solve problems because I know that by teaming up with others we can create better solutions than anyone of us can alone. I’m humble. • Synergizing can be helpful in many ways. Different ways of thinking can combine and create better ideas. People might synergize when they share ideas for a project and grow off of them.

  8. Habit 7 (sharpen the saw) • I take care of my body be getting sleep, eating right, and exercising. I spend time with my family and friends. I learn in lots of ways and lots of places, not just at school. I find meaningful ways to help others. • Sharpening the saw can improve the way you learn, think, and work. Getting sleep is the only way your brain can function well. You can sharpen the saw by having a break from homework after an important test.

  9. ALL OF THE SEVEN HABITS • BEING PROACTIVE • BEGIN WITH THE END IN MIND • PUT THINGS FIRST • THINK WIN-WIN • SEEK FIRST TO UNDERSTAND • SYNERGIZE • SHARPEN THE SAW

  10. If you follow these important habits you will have a fantastic year at derby. Good luck future 6th graders
