“The Lord is my shepherd” v.1 • Relationship – “MY shepherd” • Not enough to own Him as “A” shepherd • Not enough to own him as “THE” shepherd • Must be able to say He is “ME” shepherd • Make a choice to follow the Lord – Matthew 11:27-30 • He does not force us to follow Him if we are unwilling – Matthew 23:37
“I shall not want. He makes me to lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still waters” v. 1,2 • The Lord provides what we need – James 1:17 “comes down from the Father of lights” • Matthew 6:8,32,33 “all these things shall be added to you.” • Must be content with what he provides – Philippians 4:11,12 “learned …to be content”
“He restores my soul” v.3 • He provides spiritual life – John 10:9,10 • We have passed from death to life – John 5:24 “He leads me in the paths of righteousness for His names sake” v.3 Righteousness of God revealed in the Gospel- Romans 1:16,17 Lord leads us to a life of obedience- 1Peter 2:21,22; 1:2
“Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil, for You are with me” v.4 • Those who follow the Lord will be persecuted – 2 Timothy 3:12 “all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution.” • But we must not fear – 1 Peter 3:13,14 “do not be afraid of their threats” • Matthew 10:28 “do not fear those who kill the body”
“Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me” v.4 • As we put our trust in the Lord, we can enjoy the peace of God- Philippians 4:6,7 “let your requests be made known to God…the peace of God… will guard your hearts and minds” • We can find comfort in His promises- 1 Thessalonians 4:16-18 “comfort one another with these words”
“You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil; my cup runs over.” v.5 • Even when surrounded by enemies, the Lord will be with us & bless us- Romans 8:31-39 “If God is for us, who can be against us?” • In the end, our enemies will witness our glorification with the Lord- Romans 8:17 “if …we suffer with Him.. we may also be glorified together”
“Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life” v.6 • The Lord will be with us and not forsake us- Hebrews 13:5,6 “I will never leave you nor forsake you” • We can have confidence in His mercy & and goodness – Hebrews 4:16 “that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.”
“And I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever” v.6 • The Lord offers eternal life to those who follow Him – Romans 6:23 • We can be assured of this hope – 1 Peter 1:3,4 “a living hope…an inheritance incorruptible & undefiled & that does not fade away, reserved in heaven for you.”
