  1. Chapter 20 Postwar America

  2. -isms-MANIA! (again) • Nativism • Prejudice against foreign-born people • Isolationism • Pulling away from world affairs • Communism/Socialism • Economic system – single-party government, government control of resources

  3. About Nativism/Isolationism • Sacco/Vanzetti – victims of prejudicial public • Accused and convicted of murder more because of Italian-ness and anarchist beliefs than because of evidence (ballistics as well as witnesses who stated neither was even in the same town as the murder) • Immigration Limits • Emergency Quota Act – set maximum number of immigrants allowed into America from a given country • Re-Rise of the Klan • Devoted to “100% Americanism” • Also anti-black, union, Catholic, Jews, and saloons

  4. Labor Unrest • Boston police strike • Wanted right to unionize – denied • Asked for raises and were fired – led to strike • When strike ended, striking cops were replaced • Steel Mill • Mills resisted unions • Strikers were beaten by police, federal troops, and state militias • Earned an 8 hour day, but still no union

  5. Impact of Automobile • Paved roads • Changing architecture • Garages/carports and driveways = smaller lawn • Gas stations along major highway routes • Roadside food/general stores • Rural families escape isolation – can drive into cities • Vacations • Mobility = independence • Workers no longer have to live near work

  6. Standard of living… • Appears to go up • People have lots of consumer goods, conveniences • Irons • Fridges • Vacuum cleaners • Spread of retail industry • Chain stores, mail order, Woolworth’s Five-and-Dime stores • False prosperity • Much purchased on credit – can’t actually afford the things people had

  7. Wrap-up Questions – Add these to the end of the notes • How can we connect Nativism, Isolationism, and Communism all directly to WWI (or its end)? • Should America today try to be more Isolationist? Why or why not? • Are there any current labor issues that parallel those of the early 20th century?

  8. Time permitting… 20’s SLANG! • All Wet • Applesauce • Bearcat • Bee's Knees • Berries • Big Cheese • Bimbo • Cat's Meow • Cat's Pajamas • Heebie-Jeebies • Horsefeathers • Jake • Palooka • Pinch • Rag-a-Muffin • Spifflicated • Tomato • Wet-Blanket • Write the terms and guess their meanings. DON’T LOOK THEM UP!! It’ll be less fun! • Use each of them in sentences. • Then we will discuss the actual meanings. Perhaps hilarity will ensue.
