The development of Hinduism • Hinduism predominated in southern India, Islam in the north • Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva - gods • Decline of Buddhism benefited Hinduism
Pacific Migration • Polynesian people migrated around Pacific Ocean • Cultivated transplanted foods and domesticated animals as they moved to new islands
Trade • Increases due to collapse of overland trade routes • Dhows and Junks dominate the routes • Trade was decentralized
Indian Ocean port cities were cosmopolitan • Silk and porcelain from China • Spices from southeast Asia • Pepper, gems, pearls, and cotton from India • Incense and horses from Arabia and southwest Asia • Gold, ivory, and slaves from east Africa
East Africa • City states develop on East African coast • Ruling elites and merchant classes converted to Islam • Swahili Coast – language is a mix of Bantu and Arabic • City of Great Zimbabwe
Spread of Islam – incorporated with local cultures • Architectural blend (i.e. mud mosques, rock Christian churches) • Seen in India (Delhi Sultanate) & Western Africa (Ghana, Mali, Songhai)
Spread of Islam leads to • Literacy to African people – Arabic • Papermaking & other techs to India • Destruction of Hindu and Buddhist temples • Further converts from merchants wishing to share common moral code • Improving their lower social statuses because all equal under Allah
Effects of Trade: • Trade increases gap between elites and common people • Slavery increases – approx 2½ million slaves exported across Sahara • Even with the increase of trade, local cultures and customs remain relatively intact
