See-saw: • Levers are like a see-saw. • They have a pivot point and allow us to lift heavier weights than we normally could. • Task: Card 2: construct the see-saw balance and complete the table on the next page.
Weight x distance = weight x distance LHS = RHS
Force: • Weight is a force. This means that we can develop a formula to work out the balancing of a see-saw. Weight x distance=Weight x distance (LHS) (RHS) Force x distance = Force x distance • Force is measured in Newtons (N) • Distance is measured in metres (m) • Weight is measured in Newtons (N) • Mass is measured in kilograms (kg)
Problem: • Granny wants to ride on a see-saw with you. She has a mass of 100kg (1000N) and you have a mass of 60kg (600N). You are sitting 5m from the middle, where does granny sit? Solution: 600N x 5m = 3000Nm (LHS) 1000N x ? = 3000Nm 3000/1000 = ? = 3 ? = 3m from middle.
