The Durham Light Infantry1758 - 1968 • During it’s history 11 men of The Durham Light Infantry have been awarded the Victoria Cross • 3 of These were Tynesiders • Pte Thomas Young VC (WW1) Boldon Colliery • 2/Lieut Richard W Annand VC (WW2) South Shields • Pte Adam Wakenshaw (WW2) Newcastle • There Memorials to these brave men in their home towns and elsewhere

  3. Pte Thomas Young VC Was awarded the Victoria Cross in France during WW1. A memorial to Thomas Young is situated on the South side of the river Tyne in Northumberland in the village of High Spen where he worked in the local coal mine. It can be found in the grounds of the local school in the main street. There is also a memorial glass panel in The Health Centre at Boldon Colliery, the town of Thomas’ birth in South Tyneside. A life size bronze statue depicting Thomas Young in uniform also adorns the main staircase of South Shields Town Hall

  4. 2/Lieut. Richard W Annand VC 2 Was awarded The Victoria Cross in Belgium in WW2. A memorial to Richard Annand in the form of a life size bronze statue depicting him in uniform over looks the main staircase of South Shields magnificent Edwardian Town Hall. Richard Annand was known as the wheelbarrow VC because amongst other things he rescued his Batman under enemy fire and returned with him in a wheelbarrow.

  5. Pte. Adam Wakenshaw VC Was posthumously awarded The Victoria Cross in MersaMatruh in the Western Desert of North Africa in WW2. A memorial to Adam Wakenshaw in the form of 2 stained glass windows which are located in St. Mary’s Catholic Cathedral in Clayton Street, Newcastle Upon Tyne.

Durham LI Victoria Crosses Eleven Durham Light Infantrymen have won this the highest of decorations: Private John Byrne - 5/11/1854 - Crimea Captain Thomas de Courcy Hamilton - 11/5/1855 - Crimea Serjeant John Murray - 26/6/1864 - New Zealand Private Thomas Kenny - 4/11/1915 - First World War (France) T/Lieutenant Colonel Roland Boys Bradford - 1/10/1916 - First World War (France) Private Michael Heavyside - 6/5/1916 - First World War (France) Second Lieutenant Frederick Youens - 7/7/1917- First World War (Belgium) Captain Arthur M Lascelles MC - 3/12/1918 First World War (France) Private Thomas Young - 25/3/1918 - First World War (France) Second Lieutenant Richard W Annand - 15/5/1940 - Second World War (Belgium) Private Adam Wakenshaw - 27/6/1942 - Second World War (Western Desert)

  7. The DLI VC Memorial Is located in the grounds of The Durham Light Infantry Museum and Arts Centre in Durham City. It was unveiled on Saturday 8th September 2001 by Brigadier Bob MacGregor-Oakford CBE, MC a former Officer of the regiment It stands next to the entrance to The DLI Museum and the approximate dimensions are 6 feet wide and 4 feet high. The stone was quarried at Barnard Castle and is affixed with a black marble panel which bears the names of the eleven members of the regiment who have been awarded the Victoria Cross.
