  2. The Importance of Material Handling • Material handling is the transportation , storage and protection of materials in production, distribution, consumption and disposal. • In many cases, transpoertation is dominant. • The cost of material handling is 5 to 90 percent of the total cost

Example • An American company produced small items. • The production uses labor on high level. • The production was transferred to the Carribian area. • The company now imports, and stores the products. It packs, and labels the products for the orders of the shops of large department store chains. • Material handling cost is close to 90 percent.
