Mission Statement To effectively and professionally provide protection to the residents and visitors of the Township of Leeds and the Thousand Islands and surrounding area. Protection from adverse effects of fires, sudden medical emergencies or exposure to dangerous conditions created by man or nature that may threaten their lives or property. We strive to do so using a wide variety of programs varying from prevention and public education to response in a safe and courteous manner.
Overview • Vast area • Diverse number of structures, services and facilities • Casino, pipeline and international bridge transportation • 3 major arteries (Highways/Water/Rail) • Various lakes and private cottage laneways; not maintained by municipality • Permanent and summer residences located in small rural hamlets
Fire Prevention • Fire Protection and Prevention Act,1997 requirements met through : • Public education • Inspections • Open air burning • Smoke alarm program • Training and development
Fire Service Training • OFM, OML, WSIB, OHS-Section 21 Guidelines requirements met through: • Weekly training sessions • Internal and external extra training sessions • Cross training between stations and departments
Other Personnel/Vehicles • 1 Fire Chief (shared with Gananoque) • 1 CFPO (full time) • 1 AD/C (part time 20 hours a week) • 1 Administrator (full time/part time 27 hours a week) • 2 – ½ Ton utility trucks assigned respectively to CFPO and AD/C • 1 Fire Prevention Trailer (shared with Gananoque)
Point System • Volunteer Firefighters are compensated through a point system • Points awarded for: • Participation at training sessions • Call attendance • Clean up after calls • Fire Prevention activities • Meeting attendance • Hall check duty • Other approved activities • Average point value from 2007-2011 is $11.80 • Additionally Officers are given an honourarium based upon performance evaluation system
Summary • Leeds Thousand Islands Fire Services personnel strive to continue in the best professional manner. They are common in their goal to provide efficient, timely, and well trained response.
