Project 2 Team 3 Section 4
Initial Concepts • Optical Sensing of Density and 3D Shape • Detects height, volume, and center of gravity using cameras and lasers in order to identify metal composition using an algorithm • Electromagnetic Transmission Sensor • Pulsed magnetic field is applied for metallurgical property evaluation and a conductivity curve is used to determine the position for each metal
Initial Concepts • Absorption Spectrophotometry • Conduct an experiment by oxidizing a sample of steel and testing for manganese content using a spec 20 and Beer’s law • Koslow Chemical Testing • Uses a thin layer of chemical reaction paper to detect certain alloys by applying an electrical current and using color recognition censors
Selection Process • Three of the initial concepts tied • Research to find a way to combine the ideas • Proposed using Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) • Combined laser and optics with chemical testing • Ran the new concept through the matrix • It received the best overall rating
LIBS • The laser shoots a pulse onto the sample for 5-20 nanoseconds • The laser creates a plasma which ionizes the alloys in the sample causing the electrons to become excited • As the electrons relax and fall down to their ground state, spectral emissions are given off • Each spectral emission is unique for each element and is read by a spectrometer • From this data, elements and their concentrations can be determined

Benefits of LIBS • No sample preparation • quick and inexpensive • Non-destructive process • Requires little energy • 10-100 millijoules per pulse • Can analyze a sample from a distance • Can be incorporated into an industrial process
Industrial Process • Separate automobiles from other items before the scrap process • Scrap automobiles separately • Separate ferrous materials • Put the automobile scrap on a conveyor belt where it will go into the LIBS system • Once composition of the sample is determined, any sample with a manganese content of around 1.5% weight will be sent to the AHSS pile, while the other scrap will continue to the non AHSS pile
Industrial Process Continued • The AHSS is separated from the other scrap by using the concentration data stored on the computer and a system of 3D imaging machines and air cylinders to push the samples down the right paths • The AHSS scrap can then be introduce into the steel making process to produce LCAK steel or utilize the alloy composition to decrease alloy costs
