Habilitation and professorship: from just titles to science evaluation, careeradvancement and motivation • Extensive and timeconsumingproceduresof „habilitation“ and appointmentof a professor • Couldbeused to encourage excellence and academic mobility • „inbreeding“ shouldbediscouraged • Assistantprofessorshouldbe a youngcolleaguealreadyforming a scientific team/laboratorywithprovenrecordof excellence capable to securefunding • Professorshouldbeaninternationallyvisible personality with a very good track record („scientificschool“ -PhD students, postdocs, successfulalumni)

Chalengesahead • WE are still not goodenough!! • Increaseinternationalcharacterofthe University (more foreignstudents but also more teachers, scientists, visitingprofessorsetc.) • Establish International AdvisoryBoard • Increase mobility, fightinbreeding • Pushforexcellency • Novel corecentersofthe University such as biomedicinecenters in Plzen and HradeccKralove, Biocev and Campus Albertov – anopportunity to be met • Preservefriendly, collaborative, creativeinterdisciplinaryatmosphere • Encourageinternational, peer-reviewbasedevaluationof science in the Czech republic • Encourageprogramsfor excellence in thefundingof Czech science (GIST)
