  1. GROUP No. 12 Presentation on Rocky hyrax and Tree hyrax

  2. Rocky Hyrax. • Kingdom – Animalia. • Phylum – Chordata. • Class – Mammalia. • Order – Hydrocoidea. • Family – Procaviidae. • Genus – Procavia. • Species – Capensis.

  3. Tree Hyrax. • Kingdom – Animalia. • Phylum – Chordata. • Class – Mammalia. • Order – Hyracoidea. • Family – Procaviidae. • Genus – Dendrohyrax. • Species – Arboreus.

  4. Physical CharacteristicsThe hyrax, also called rock rabbit or dassie, is a small furry mammal. It looks like a rabbit with rounded ears and no tail. Hyraxes have stumpy toes with hooflike nails, four toes on each front foot and three on each back foot. The longer, clawlike nails on the inside toes of the back feet are used for grooming and scratching. The bottoms of the feet have a rubbery texture to assist in climbing steep rock surfaces and trees. The rock hyrax has the widest distribution in East Africa. Its coat is yellowish or grayish-brown, and the dorsal spot (a bare scent gland on the back covered with longer hair) is covered with black or yellow hair. Each colony has a dominant male and female. Its head is more rounded than other types of hyraxes, and the nose is rounded.

  5. Tree hyraxes, unsurprisingly, spend a lot of time eating on trees or sometimes on the ground and solitary although they may be concentrated in one area. In some areas they are hunted for their thick, soft, long hair. They have a white or yellow dorsal spot.

  7. Differences between Rocky and Tree Hyraxes.

  8. Similarities of Hyraxes and an Elephant. • 1. Male Hyraxes lack scrotum and their testicles remain tucked up in their abdominal cavity next to the kidney the same as an Elephant. • 2. Female Hyraxes have the part of teats near their armpits as well as 4 teats in their inguinal area, Elephant have a pair of teats near their axillae.

  9. Presence of teats in Hyrax and an Elephant.

  10. 3. The Hyraxes develops inscisors teeth as the Elephant develops tusks, in most of other mammals tusks are developed from the canine.

  11. Hyrax inscissors and Elephant tusks.

  12. 4. Hyraxes like Elephants have nails on the tips of their paws rather than nails.

  13. DietRock hyraxes spend several hours sunbathing in the mornings, followed by short excursions to feed. They eat quickly with the family group facing out from a circle to watch for potential predators, feeding on grasses, herbage, leaves, fruit, insects, lizards and birds' eggs. After biting off a mouthful of grass or leaves, the hyrax looks up and cautiously checks the vicinity. If the territorial male gives the shrill shriek of alarm, the hyraxes jump or scuttle to cover where they remain frozen, without moving, until the danger has passed. They can go a long time without water, apparently obtaining enough moisture from their food. Tree hyraxes feed on leaves and fruits and they are nocturnal.

  14. Reproduction Rock hyraxes give birth to two or three young after a gestation period of 6–7 months (long, for their size). The young are well developed at birth with fully opened eyes and complete pelage. Young can ingest solid food after two weeks and are weaned at ten weeks. After 16 months, the rock hyraxes become sexually mature, they reach adult size at three years, and they typically live about ten years. During seasonal changes, the weight of the male reproductive organs (testis, seminal vesicles) changes due to sexual activity

  15. Tree hyrax Female hyrax give birth up to four young’s after a gestation period between 7- 8 months, depend on a species. Young are weaned at one to 5 months of age and reach sexual maturity at 16 - 17 months.

  16. Habitat and Distribution. The rock hyrax habitat is normally found between large rocks, and in Africa occurs across sub-Saharan Africa .A larger, longer-haired subspecies is abundant in the glacial moraines in the alpine zone of Mount Kenya and in Tanzania they are found in areas as shown in the diagram

  17. Tree hyrax • The East African tree hyrax is restricted to the Tanzanian coast and coastal islands and montain forests in the east of the country. All tree hyraxes are nocturnal and territorial. They are usually scattered singly or in small groups, however, sometimes they occur in high densities

  18. conclusion • Knowing the behavior and characteristic between these two similar species its vital in order to conserve them from extinction.
