Watch David Attenborough segment on “Origins of Life” (approximately 25mins) • While watching movie complete worksheet which corresponds with the movie. (This worksheet I will collect at the end of class for assessment purposes.) 3.) When movie commences you will exchange your paper with your neighbor and mark each others responses in PEN. I will utilize my PowerPoint to have a discussion on the movie and go over the correct answers! 4.) Turn in all papers at the end of class!

  2. Objective for today: Through media you will get a final look on how life began for animals 600 million years ago. You will look at odd animal fossil remains, and complete a worksheet which corresponds with the movie. This worksheet will be collected and assessed.

  6. Evolution (Primitive Sea Creatures Similar to Sea Creatures of Today…)

  7. Movie Discussion: 1.) Five hundred forty two million years ago what kind of animals existed on the ocean floor? Cambrian animals

  8. 2.) There were many kinds of odd animal fossil remains found from the Cambrian Period. What kind of animal in particular rummaged the ocean floor, looked like a worm, and had 5 eyes? Opabinia Why did these animals need 5 eyes? As the predators became bigger & stronger (evolved,) the prey needed 5 eyes to help it spot trouble. (The prey evolved as the predators evolved!)

  9. 3.) Who was the first predator on Earth? Hint: The mouth was originally thought to be a fossil jellyfish, the grasping arms were originally thought to be large shrimp, and the soft body was originally thought to be part of a sponge. Anomalocaris

  10. If you traveled to the Great Barrier Reef, what kind of animal would you most likely see there? One whom is very similar to the ancient Anomalocaris and many say directly evolved from this species. Mantis Shrimp

  11. 5.)What animals developed protective shells? Arthropods Name 4 Different Arthropods from today: • Shrimp • Lobster • Crabs • Centipedes Trilobite Name an Ancient Arthropod: • Trilobites

  12. Assessment: Objective Through media you will get a final look on how life began for animals 600 million years ago. You will look at odd animal fossil remains, and complete a worksheet which corresponds with the movie. This worksheet will be collected and assessed. What kind of animals existed on the ocean floor 542 million years ago? • Cambrian animals Why did these animals look so odd? Example, have such features as 5 eyes? • As the predators evolved, the prey too evolved! Predators got stronger, so the prey adapted to survive.

  13. Good-bye my friends! I had a blast! I hope everyone feels like they have a good grasp on the concept of evolution! Until next time we meet! I will miss you all…
