Cornell Notes: The Reformation Mrs. Lowell 2014 Trailer
1. Why did the Reformation begin? • During the Renaissance, a reform movement against the Roman Catholic Church, called the Reformation began • Complaints: • The sale of indulgences: The church taught that indulgences could be bought for someone to reduce their time in purgatory (where souls went before they went to heaven). • the pope had become too powerful-acting like a king. • Many priests didn’t know basic church teachings These unpopular practices weakened the church, and people began calling for reform (change). No money, can’t buy indulgences, I guess I’m not welcome here
2. Martin Luther’s Reforms: • Luther nailed a list of complaints to a church door in Germany called the Ninety-Five Theses. • anyone could have a direct relationship with God. • Wanted people to interpret the Bible themselves, not priests. • Those who sided with Luther and protested against the church became known as Protestants. Reformers The sale of indulgences is wrong! No one should buy their way into heaven. If the Church has this power, why not give it away for free?
