MICROBIAL AND CHEMICAL WATER POLLUTION OF SHKUMBIN RIVER AT ELBASAN REGION

Shkumbini River in Albania faces pollution issues affecting water quality. Monitoring microbial indicators and chemical parameters is crucial. Results show high faecal coliform levels, especially near industrial areas, emphasizing the need for water conservation and management.

  1. MICROBIAL AND CHEMICAL WATER POLLUTION OF SHKUMBIN RIVER AT ELBASAN REGION

  2. Shkumbini Shkumbini River lies entirely within the territory of Albania and collects the waters of a mountainous territory which is shown also by the average high of the catchment basin which is from 753 m above sea level. Shkumbini is fed by the fluxes coming from the plains and mountainous areas. The area of its catchment basin is 2445 km2, its length 181.4 km, and the average width 13.4 km. “water is not a trade product as something else, but a heredit that should be saved ,protect and trained as it is”

  3. One of the main issues of the river maintenance is the monitoring of the pollution where an important role is the monitoring of the microorganisms that are indicators of the water pollution and the chemical parameters affecting their growth. The faecal coliforms bacteria are capable fermenting the lactose producing gasses in high temperatures, 44.5 º C within 24 hours.

  4. 108 water samples with a frequency of once in ten days during 12 months in 2008 are collect in Shkumbini River and tested for chemical and microbial contents The method used in the study is multiple fermentation tubes, MPN (Most Probable Number) by expressing the number of the bacterias by means of the index MPN EC Broth Media is used The cultivation was done in 44.5°C for 24 hour MATERIALS AND METHODS

  5. The monitored areas in Shkumbini River 1.Krasta area, which is the entrance part of river in the city. 2. Shkumbini Bridge, which is defined by a industrial activity along it. 3.Valasi Bridge, which represent the exit of this river from the city carring all the discharge

  6. Results and discussions MONITORING WATER POLLUTION OF SHKUMBIN RIVER

  7. Water color Out of 108 samples: 58 are colorless, 41 light turbidity 3 muddy, 6 turbid color. Water smell Out of 108 samples:106 water samples are odorless,2 water samples smelly. Water temperature The temperature various from 9°C in winter to 35°C in summer.

  8. Chimical parameters in Shkumbini River water Table 1 The results of chimical parameters in Shkumbini River Table 2 Standards of Faecal Coliforms in rivers waters

  9. The faecal coliforms in monitoring area Graphic 1 Faecal coliforms in the three monitored areas

  10. The level of faecal coliforms in Shkumbini Riverwaterrelated to monitored place Graphic 2 The level of pollution from the Faecal Coliforms in Shkumbini River water

  11. The level of Faecal Coliforms pollution during four seasons Graphic 3 The level of faecal coliforms in different seasons.

  12. The level of Faecal Coliforms pollution related to water temperature Graphic 4 The level of faecal coliforms in relation to the temperature of water

  13. Conclusions Faecal Coliforms are present in large number in the Shkumbini River especially in the Shkumbini Bridge and the Valas Bridge where the defined standard is surpassed many times. The most polluted area is Valasi bridge. The number of faecal coliforms is affected no only from the different parameters tested but also from the different shedding that end up in this river affecting so the reduction of water quality and making it so a very serious problem for the health Shkumbini river water is certainly polluted and if the proccess of the shedding in the river and no managing of the urban wastes will continued the situation for this waters and environment even more problematic in the future.
