  1. Improvements to the Airport Business Suite A decision support system for airport development, planning and operations

  2. Overview • The airport business suite consists of three layers: • Graphical User Interface (GUI) • Computational models • Common Data-layer • Currently mostly used by students • Course ‘Strategic Airport Planning’ • Fourth year exercises • Ideal testing ground

  3. Models in the original ABS Model 4/5 Model 2 Model 1

  4. Models in the original ABS • Model 1: Demand forecasting • Passenger demand based on city pairs • Model 2: Airport capacity and delay • Airside capacity: FAA airfield capacity model • Delay: Network of queuing models • Landside: IATA terminal capacity model • Model 4/5: Economics • Turnover, operational costs and investments

  5. Improvements • Model 1 replaced by flight schedule generator • Aircraft based instead of passenger based • More versatile • Easier to use • More possible growth scenario’s (de-peak / peak) • Model 4/5 removed • Results proved unreliable • Replaced with some data output for manual calculations

  6. Graphical User Interface (GUI) • Model 3 is actually the GUI • The GUI allows the users to interact with the models and the data. • Running peak-day cases • Running yearly cases (collection of peakday cases) • Editing parameters • Creating new flight schedules • Creating input for INM

  7. Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (AMS) • Exists from 1916 • In 2003: • KLM Main hub • 4th largest airport in Europe (#pax) • 9th largest airport worldwide (#pax) • 393 000 aircraft movements • 39.9 Million passengers • 1.3 Million tons of freight

  8. AMS: Runway Expansion € 420 000 000 € 860 000 000 € 1 280 000 000

  9. AMS: 2003, 5P Base case (actual flight schedule used)

  10. AMS: 2010, 5P 2003-2010: 6.85% peak-wise yearly growth

  11. AMS: 2020, 5P 2010-2020: 2.96% peak-wise yearly growth

  12. AMS: 2020, 5P 2010-2020: 2.96% normal yearly growth

  13. AMS: 2020, 6P 2010-2020: 2.96% normal yearly growth

  14. AMS: 2020, 6PK 2010-2020: 2.96% normal yearly growth

  15. AMS: 2020 Storm Arrival Capacity 6P 6PK

  16. Conclusions and Recommendations • AMS • 6PK seems the preferred choice for 2020 • ABS • Able to compute airport performance indicators • Lot of manual input • A lot of work comparing output • Improvements will be used mostly for HARMOS
