So many acronyms………. • QCE, QCAA (formerly QSA), QTAC, OP, QCST, VHA, SA, LUI, a SET Plan, VET (what does this have to do with animals?), UQ, QUT…………

What is a Queensland Certificate of Education? A QCE will be awarded to your son if their course of study satisfies some specific requirements: • a significant amount of learning • a set standard of achievement • meets the literacy and numeracy requirement.
Types of Learning • Core (eg: OP and non Op subjects, VET Certificates) • Preparatory (eg: VET Certificate 1s) • Enrichment (eg: AMEB, St Cecilia School of Music, Swimming Queensland Association) • Advanced (University study whilst undertaken at school)
The Senior Education Profile On completion of Year 12, students receive a Senior Education Profile. • All students receive a Senior Statement • Eligible students receive a: • QCE • Tertiary Entrance Statement
Alternate Pathways Some students choose a pathway that does require an OP or university entrance directly from school. Eg: Diploma = OP equivalent of a 9 Cert IV = OP equivalent of a 12 Cert III = OP equivalent of a 15
What is an Overall Position (OP)? An Overall Position: • gives a student’s rank order position based on overall achievement in Authority subjects • requires that students study at least 20 semester units (usually five subjects) in Authority subjects with at least three subjects studied for four semesters • is divided into bands, with Band 1 being the highest and Band 25 the lowest
How are OP’s reported • Band 1 about 2.75% of students • Band 2 to 6 about 23% of students • Band 7 to 15 about 54% of students • Band 16 to 20 about 18% of students • Band 22 to 24 about 2% of students • Band 25 about .01% of students
The QCS test and the OP The Queensland Core Skills (QCS) test • is a Queensland test, designed for Queensland students, developed by the QSA and administered in schools • a common statewide scaling test for Queensland Year 12 students • an achievement test, not an intelligence or aptitude test
The QCS test and the OP • An individual student’s OP is not determined by their individual QCS test results • It is very important that all OP-eligible students in a school perform to the best of their ability as the group result is used to determine the individual OP
What if your son does not know what to do??? He should keep his options open!
How to maximise your son’s OP Ensure that your son completes subjects he likes and subjects that he is good at because of the R6 and the Subject Achievement Indicators (SAIs)
OP Results - Myths • I must do Maths and Science to get a good OP • If I get 5 VHAs I will get an OP1 • If I do poorly on the QCS Test I will get a poor OP

Subject Selection Your son should choose subjects based on the following: • What are his career goals? • Which subjects he is interested in? • The subjects he likes • The tertiary course he is interested in • Possible course prerequisites
SET Plan Interviews • Start next week • Booking process is the same as parent/teacher/student interviews • Interviews will go for 30 minutes • Please bring subject selection form, QTAC book, and your SET Plan Form • Year 10 Session tomorrow – please bring QTAC book • Students will receive a hard copy of their SET Plan forms tomorrow and I will also email a copy to students and parents.
Learning Account • All Year 11 and 12 students in Queensland have a learning account. • Your learning account includes all your enrolments and results.
Student Connect • https://studentconnect.qcaa.qld.edu.au/ Students enter their LUI. Students enter their password.
