Directions • Get with your shoulder partner • Partner A is Peanut Butter • Partner B is Jelly • IT’S PEANUT BUTTER JELLY TIME!!! • With your partner, read pages 30 and 31 (Types of Governments) and define the four types of government that the book talks about • Peanut Butter – defines Monarchy and Theocracy • Jelly – defines Dictatorships and Democracies

  15. More Directions • Using Your Roots, try to define the remaining sixtypes of government • Peanut Butter – define Oligarchy, Communism, and Theocracy • Jelly – Define Totalitarianism, Republic, and Egalitarianism

  16. MONARCHY • One Ruler • Characteristics: There is a king, queen, or emperor in charge of the government • Example: United Kingdom

  17. DICTATORSHIP • The leader’s word is the rule • Characteristics: In a dictatorship, one person has total control over every detail of government, and the people have very little power. • Example: Saddam Hussein’s Iraq (before 2003)

  18. TOTALITARIANISM • A belief in total control • Characteristics: The government controls every aspect of the people’s lives • Example: Italy during WWII (under Mussolini)

  19. OLIGARCHY • A group of several people control all power • Characteristics: Typically, the richest people control the country • Example: Ancient Greece

  20. SOCIALISM/COMMUNISM • All is shared/Power of people is grouped by the government • Characteristics: The government takes all the power, money, etc., and gathers it together. They then control everything and share with the people what they see fit. • Example: North Korea, Soviet Union (until 1991)

  21. DEMOCRACY • The people have the power • Characteristics: In a pure democracy, every citizen can vote on every issue • Example: Ancient Rome

  22. REPUBLIC • People are chosen to represent other people in government • Characteristics: A representative is chosen to make decisions for a group of people. • Example: Again, Ancient Rome had Senators who were chosen to represent the people

  23. EGALITARIANISM • Everything is equal • There are no examples of this in the world, as of now

  24. THEOCRACY • A religion rules the government • Example: Iran

  25. WHAT ABOUT THE UNITED STATES? • We are considered to be a Democratic Republic • The people have the power to vote, but… • They choose representatives to make the biggest decisions in government.
