  2. Socrates (469-399 B.C.E.) • Socrates never wrote his ideas. He debated with others to figure out the meaning of “wisdom,” “virtue,” “beauty,” “piety,” etc. • His pupil, Plato wrote dialogues with Socrates as the character.

  3. The Apology • Socrates is tried for blasphemy and “corrupting the youth.” • Socrates defends himself at his trial.

  4. Socrates’ friend asks the Oracle who is the wisest. • The oracle says, “Socrates is the wisest.” • Socrates is baffled. How could he be the wisest if he knows very little?

  5. He wants to know who is “wise” and what “wisdom” means. • He asks • Politicians • Poets • Craftsmen

He is banished from Athens. • Socrates is bummed. • How can he be free to practice philosophy outside his home town (the greatest city?) • Banishment means he can’t practice philosophy FREELY. i.e. he can’t inquire where he wants to, or to whomever he wants to. • If you, put a limit on philosophical inquiry, it means you’re not doing philosophy.

  13. Socrates says: Inquiry is the best way to live. • “The unexamined life is not worth living.”

  14. Plato’s Symposium describes how Socrates gathers his friends, discusses philosophical questions about life and death. • He drinks Hemlock.
